Help Unable to connect to proxy server 3G/4G problems on HTC One M8

Hi there,

I'm having problems connecting to the internet on my HTC One M8. It's not a problem when I'm connected to the wifi, but if I am out of a wifi zone it doesn't work.

When I try and connect to, say bbc.co.uk, I get the the message 'Unable to connect to proxy server'. I can still use messenging services like, bbm (yes I still use it- lol) and whatsapp, but web pages don't work. Things like google maps and Uber also work, but Sky News, BBC apps don't.

I also still get the 4G symbol at the top of my home screen.

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much.

It's a way to get admin access on your phone and change things in the normal operating system - if you've never heard of it, you're in the vast majority, it's just something I check.

A proxy server is a gateway that parses Internet connections - and can contain a firewall to block various sites.

Your wifi is obviously not going through a proxy server - but it looks like your carrier is using one.

That's neither common nor rare. Just something that some of them do to control network traffic.

Could you access those sites from another type of phone, same carrier?

If not, maybe have a chat with them, see what they're doing.

Hmm okay. My friends don't seem to be having the problem on their phones with the same carrier.

I've recently (in the last few months) changed from a Blackberry Z10 to the HTC M8, and didn't have the problems with BB on the same carrier.

I've been using Chrome, but I can't connect on the normal 'Internet' app also. I get the message 'Web page not available'

I can try speaking to them, but they're not the most customer friendly/competent of carriers, so I thought I'd check here first :)

So it's definitely not the carrier. Unless they screwed up your data plan.

That leaves the phone.

Did you buy your phone there or from another region or country?

Right, I MIGHT have fixed it.

My carrier has recently told me that I needed to update my APN settings which I have done. However, I think they might have given me incorrect information because in the 'Proxy' of the 'New APN' were some numbers - which I have just deleted. The internet seems to be working now when not connected to the wifi.

I did a bit of a scout around their website and found this:

http://www.ooredoo.om/Personal/Device/Configuration/Android.aspx

The webpage looked quite out of date, but I noticed there were no numbers in the proxy section so thought I'd just double check the 'New APN', and there the numbers were, so that seemed to be causing the problem.

Thanks so much for your help. Fingers crossed it keeps working

Good work sorting that out!

Yes, although I forgot about those settings, and sorry, wasn't thinking, you did exactly the right thing.

I bet you'll have no further trouble with it. :)

If you do, enter 0 or 0.0.0.0 for the proxy address.

It all adds up to - go away, no proxy.

Actually, you unknowingly guided me in the right direction when you said it wasn't the carrier. I then thought, I bet it actually is, and did a bit more digging - so THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

We don't have my choice of carriers here in Qatar, and the one I'm on is the best of the two available. Lol.

Thanks again.
