Help unable to hang up

becca2002

Lurker
My lg screen blanks out whenever I make a phone call. I have adjusted all the settings. Done a factory reset. Even when phone is lying on a table and I dial a number the screen blanks out so I cannot use dial pad or hang up.
If I get connected to someone I can talk to them but I can it continue using my phone until they hang up.
What should I do?????

Is your display simply going to sleep? Does tapping the screen not bring it back? Check: Settings > Display > Sleep

Also, do you have a screen protector that may be covering up the sensors at the top of the screen?

Thank you.
I have set the screen never to sleep and yet it still blanks out when on a call.
I have cut off the top part of my screen protector thinking that may be the problem too but that didnt change anything.

This MIGHT be more specific to your model of LG phone having this issue. Maybe a mod can move this to that phone specific section. Or you could just double post it I guess.

As far as general Android ideas about this, I can't think of any right now. And I don't see anything in the dialer settings.

Thanks for ur speedy replies.
I wish it was just my problem but my husbands samsung 3 also has the same problem.
I found it weird that both phones had same problem and fustrating that both were only purchased a ciuple montha ago.

It could very well be your screen protector. It could be covering up the proximity sensor causing the phone to think you have it held up to your ear

Edit - just re-read your post saying that you already tried that  just ignore this post :o

A couple months ago I bought an optimus g. Last couple weeks I have been having problems.

When I make a phone call or some one calls me my screen blanks out. I tap the screen and it is unresponsive. I press the power button and nothing happens.

I set options so the screen never goes to sleep. Same blank out happens.

I set power button to end call. Same blank out happens.

I cut off the top of my sceen protector thinking a sensor was blocked. Same blank out happens.

I did a factory reset. Same blank out happens.

The phone will only respond once the person on the other end hangs up. If I get a machine I have to wait for it to figure out to disengage.

I called the tech support and they want me to send it in to get looked at. I can't afford to be with out my phone for a month.

Can someone here help please?????

Funny thing is my husbands samsung 3 is doing the same thing. I posted on the general forum and suggested reposting on lg forum.

Any suggestions besides throwing it out the window would be appreciated. ;P

It seems common that the phone app has different screen sleep behavior than the general OS. See if you can bring up a menu in the phone app and find settings there.

Also, in Settings -> Accessibility there may be a checkbox for "Power button ends call"...that could help.

Yes. I found that option in settings. I checked the box saying use power button to turn off phone yet when the screen is blanked out the power button doesn't hang up the call. .
I can do a reboot by hoding the power and volume keys together but that doesn't solve my problem of needing to use the key pad for automated systems.

Hello Becca And welcome to AF.

You actually have tried many of the suggestions I would give.:D
including throwing the dang thing out the window:p

It does sound like a faulty proximity sensor, it does not realize the phone is away from your face. Have you tried wiping the section of the screen where the sensor is while its blanked out? I know where I live if I am sweaty my nexus 4 will keep the screen blank till I wipe the sensor.
Also let me ask do you know if you make a call but do not put it to your face, say put it on speaker, does it still blank out?

Ouch, that's a bummer.

What model and carrier do you have? It may be useful to see if anyone else with your model and carrier has the same problem. However, since your husband's Samsung 3 has the problem too it's probably not the phone...either it's some basic user error that nobody here has thought to ask, or there's something weird with your carrier.

Other options I can think of at the moment:
1. Alternative dialer/phone app. Search Play for dialer.
2. Root and install a different ROM.
3. Try to repair it properly with your carrier's tech support...but who wants to deal with that? Yuck! ;)
4. Force a wakelock condition. I think there are apps that are made specifically for this. Search play for wakelock or screen always on.

Thanks. Something new to try. Carrier is rogers canada. They say that it is not them the problem is.
I will search play and let u know.

One other thought: You said you tried factory reset. Did you try making calls immediately after factory reset, before installing any apps (if they didn't get automatically reinstalled when you logged in)? It could be some app that you and your husband both use that's messing it up.

Yes I made calls after factory reset. I was so upset that my back up didnt work and the possibility of having to send it away I didnt install any aps. I tried installing other dialer aps but same blank out happen.
Maybe I just wasnt meant to have a smart phone. LOL
