Help Unable to unlock screen

Phone model - Gionee Elife S7
Android version - Lollipop
I installed MS outlook app in my new phone which enforced me to put a strong device password. So I initially set a 8 character password. Then I thought to change it to a 4 digit password. So in setting -> security -> screen lock I selected 4 digit password option. I confirmed my 8 character password then It took me to a screen where I had to enter my new 4 digit password. But after typing 4 digits confirm button was not enabled. But I was able to set 8 digits and proceed for confirmation. My password was reset.
After some half an hour when I came to unlock my screen I was prompted with a screen in which I have only option to enter 4 digits as my password. But actually my password is of 8 digits. I am not able to unlock my phone.
Need help. I do not want to do a hard reset.

Might be worth contacting Gionee, see if they can suggest anything, it could be a bug/issue/feature of their firmware.

It's a Chinese phone that's distributed in some countries in Asia.

I know there was some issues with Exchange/Outlook enforced device security with earlier versions of Oppo and Vivo firmware, which are also Chinese and similar to Gionee.
