When I try to update, it gets half way through then freezes on a screen with a phone icon and a red exclamation mark in a triangle. Only taking the battery out and putting it back in will get it to work again.

When I go into recovery mode and click recovery, the same thing happens.

Would rooting the phone help in any way for me to update?

I realise this problem has been posted before but I was unable to find any solutions.

Sounds like a root question, and you might already be rooted. Since you took the update it is causing issue with your phone now and you may have lost root, but also cannot finish the update, you might have to run the RUU to get back to stock, I will move this to the root section for proper support. Good Luck
