Unbiased opinion for EVO vs Galaxy S?

An optical zoom instead of a digital zoom would be nice (I know, I know I'm a dreamer). Theres a Canon EOS D30 with 6mp yet it kicks the bleep out of a modern day snap and shoot 14mp camera. Why? It's all about the lens quality. How fast or slow it snaps pictures or whether it can or can't do both and how it enhances an image when it zooms. For example a digital zoom will digitally enhance an area and make it appear closer, while an optical zoom which is mechanically made to physically zoom on something would make it look x50 times better.

What chances do you think there will be an optical zoom on a camera phone? That does make a lot of sense but is there anything that we might see on phone camera that would make 5mp better than an 8mp?

I'm probably just answering my own question but you also mentioned that other determining factors are how fast or slow it snaps, and enhances an image. Is this something possible that we could see on a phone camera digitally? I would love to see these cameras become more and more advanced.

It's possible we might get one in the future but given HTC's record of using mid to low range cameras on their phones not likely. The Nokia N93i has a x3 optical zoom which is amazing for a phone, but I'm sure once better cameras come out for phones and become more mainstream you'll have more choices. I mean the camera on the Evo is no slouch don't get my wrong, it's coming with a very nice mid-range camera but like I said I've never seen an HTC device carry a cutting edge camera. Will you see an improvement from your 5MP phone camera to the Evo's? More than likely, but don't pawn your snap and shoot camera just yet, I imagine camera quality will be comparable in good light but start to show some flaws in less than optimal conditions regardless of it's dual flash because of it's slow shutter speed.

Don't forget censor size, the tiny censors on these cameras have a hard time taking in a lot of light (mixed with bad optics) which give you the noise you often see from cellphone pictures.

The things that make me consider the Galaxy S over the EVO are:
- 1GHz Hummingbird Processor
- 16GB of internal storage
- Super AMOLED screen

But like many others I really don't like the UI Samsung put on the Galaxy S, it's to much like the Iphone and I'm not a fan of that. Out of all the Android stock/custom UI's I've seen so far I like the HTC's Sense UI the best, which is the biggest thing that really draws me to the EVO over the Galaxy S. The other things that I like about the EVO over the Galaxy S are:
-4.3 inch screen
-WiFi Hotspot
-8MP Camera
-HDMI port
-4G

I agree size dont garantee that the image will be better. Lense and Censor is important.

there is the other side.. Speed of which it takes a picture. And the speed of which it processes the picture and gets back to ready to take the next picture...

How many times have you tried to take a picture with your phone.. but the time you press the button and the time it actually captures the pic.. I have missed a lot of important shots, because it takes it 1 - 3 secs to even start the capture, then it takes it another 1-3 sec to be ready for the next capture.

If by some miracle the Galaxy S comes to sprint as a 4G device, I'll buy it over the EVO. Sense is great, but I don't need it. The samsung overlay is ugly, but that can be moded. The deciding factor for me would be the screen. I'm outside a lot on campus and would like to have a screen I can read. Also, I don't need a 4.3" screen. Sure the S isn't much smaller, but it is a little and that helps. If I was a woman with a purse, EVO all the way, but it has to go in my pocket. 4G is a requirement at this point though. Cincinnati is supposed to get it this year, so I'd be a fool to get a 3g phone even if 4g is patchy.

While the screen is nice, I've seen an HD2 and those LCDs are high enough quality to not make me really miss the Super AMOLED.

The internal storage and faster processer/GFX are the main advantages. Honestly, it's the former that gives me the most pause--android phones sorely need internal storage, especially since their multimedia capabilities have gotten much better recently. The extra GFX power seems kind of a nonissue at this point as it looks like games won't really take off until after the release of Froyo, and by the time developers catch up I'll be up for another upgrade (since premier upgrades are yearly).

So I'll reluctantly take the EVO with Sense, the 8MP, kickstand, slightly larger screen, 4G, kickstand, and superior 3rd party dev community over the S.

the EVO is slick and sexy while the Galaxy is ugly and the S is even uglier (can you tell I hate physical keyboards?)

I think the build quality will be better on the EVO. I am a current samsung owner and i have to admit it has held up well but most samsung phones i have handled do not impress me like the htc devices I have handled. JMO.

The EVO will be my first Android . im coming from a pre but before that was a Instinct and I know its been some time but that phone fell short for me .

One good reason never to buy Samsung is it's lousy support and lack of updates. Samsung always brings cutting edge to the table, support it while it's still "hot" then completely abandons the product and starts doing something else. Thus completely abandoning the prior product's support and good luck getting future updates.

But don't get my wrong HTC has done this in the past as well, just not like Samsung which does it for anything they make. They'll support a product for maybe a month or two then move on. Both companies have a horrible track record as far as support goes but Samsung is by far the worst company to get support from in the electronic industry.

I posted this question a while ago...seems like it's a hot topic still...I'm still undecided if sprint changes the plans for EVO I'm staying with Tmobile and will get the Samsung.

The Galaxy is a very nice phone. I really love the Super AMOLED screen, and wished that the Evo could have it. I also like the idea of a separate GPU and CPU. I however question the battery's logevity with two powerful processors.

I however like the Evo's 4G tethering capability. And Sprint's plan prices. For me, this are the main reason I'll be switching to Sprint when the Evo comes out. Hopefully with the same prices for their 4G service.

I was interested in the keyboard version until I saw the custom skin that samsung was using and now that I'm using swype and starting to get used to it I don't think I need that keyboard anymore.

Since that skin looks terrible and knowing samsung's record on updates combined with at&t's record on neutering devices I'll pass.

Samsung has a way of ruining their phones with their proprietary UI's. I would seriously avoid Samsung phones. Plus, they tend not to have good reception.

I personally would never buy another samsung phone i'm currently using the behold 2 and i've had to have two new ones sent to me due to malfunctions. Throw in the terrible UI and lack of support (still running 1.5) and i couldn't be more unhappy with samsung NEVER again.

I hear you mate. I've been lurking on the Samsung Moment forums, and until now, they are wishing for an official 2.1 update. It's a good thing the community have come forward to address the need that Samsung left high and dry. I don't think I'll buy a Samsung phone simply because of the unsupported issues that Samsung continues to ignore.

Okay I wouldn't get the S because it having a gpu and CPU will waste way more batt, and the UI looks like an iPhake, plus EVO has kickstand... what more is there to say?

do a search on the ATT backflip phone review.

Thanks. I'll check that out. I have done some searches that turned up some interesting info.

AT&T seems to not be the place for decent phones. I was considering moving back to Spring, but feedback I get in my area is that their service is as poor now as it was 4 years ago when I moved away from them.

Sigh...
