hi, sorry if the info im looking for is in another thread but after looking for a while i couldnt find it :|

i have what i thought was an unbranded phone on voda but after some looking it seems it is as it has the .161. in the software number which means it is branded just without the branding

now i would like to run 2.2 much like everybody else with a desire but i am unsure of what i need to do it, do i need to root it first or can i just use a gold card or what?

all and any help is much apreciated :)

Welcome to the forum.
Turn your phone off, then turn back on while holding the back button to check which hboot you have.
If you have 0.83 or higher you may run into problems, also check to see if you have an slcd screen as that causes additional problems

thanks for the welcome and the reply :)

doing that it says;

BRAVO PVT1 SHIP S - ON
HBOOT -0.80.0000
MICROP-031d
TOUCH PANEL-SYNT0101
RADIO-4.06.00.02_2

not that that means much to me atm but its 0.80 and synt im guessing your after?

As you got the 0.80 hboot you can root & or use goldcard.
It depends on which path you want to take, the one click rooting tool is excellent if you want to root as its the easiest method.
There are 2 methods in the goldcard tool post both of which are easy to use.
You just need to decide which way you want to go.

i used the one click method, pretty easy considering i spent a week cowering, with the inability to push myself to finally root...

happily running 2.2 now though, frozen yoghurt goodness! :p

I see you are quite comfortable with it all now m8, nice to see it too.

yeah, comfortable till my phone decides it would rather be a paper weight. if that happens, you'll find me crying in the corner :p

thanks a lot guys :)

my next question is which 2.2 Rom would you advise? I'm new to Linux so one that is easy would be nice :)

linux? you can flash the roms you get as a zip file on the phone..

have a look over at xda, and i think modaco have them aswell? there's a bunch of custom roms to get, some of which are the official 2.2 froyo OTA updates with root access..

alot of the videos i have seen show what looks like a linux cmd promt :/

i tried to use the 1 click method last night with no joy :(

so it looks like i will have to try a gold card later today

sorry ignore that, i reread the guide before and noticed what i was doing (trying to update the driver at the wrong time) wrong xD

funny how good sleep is for thinking, and reading, and the simple things you know :D

its done and dusted, im now running pays v1.6 but i am open to try others if theres a good reason to switch as its easy once you have done it :D
