hi everyone, totally new to htc and android. loving it btw much better than the iphone..

i just got my desire on 3 network (uk) it's not branded and running 2.2

how do i root it and can i install my own .apk's (i used cydia and installous on the iphone)

or shall i wait til 2.3 comes out?

thanks in advance.

thanks for that...i'll have a read and post back any questions if that ok..

Sure. If you post within those particular threads, it acts as a running log of queries ;)

Before you do anything, go to Settings>About phone>Software information and post the Software version on your phone

software 2.29.405.5

can i install .apk files using astro manager without rooting?

is this the stock RUU for my phone?

i'm happy with the stock rom for now, so will i benefit from rooting?

if i can install .apk's without rooting that'll do me til i get my confidence with it.

was happy messing with the iphone but andriod is all new to me..

Yes its what's on your phone currently.

There are benefits to rooting but if you don't need to root right now, I'd hold off for a while

my bootloader is 0.93 is this a problem as the guides or for 0.75 + 0.83 below..

and how do i nandroid back up??

Nope, if you have a RUU and a goldcard and you've read SUroot's FAQ you'll be fine. You need to flash a custom recovery before you can do a Nandroid backup.

i have an RUU (thanks SUroot)

custom recovery and nandroid backup is when i get lost

i've read the faq, but it states

"Settings>About phone. We need to check if your software is the ARA build (ARA 2.xx.415.x)"

mine is 405 so what do i do? do i use UnrEVOked 3.21

what about creating a recovery?

thanks..

Ok, first off you don't need to create a recovery, unrEVOked takes care of all that. Second you should still be fine, I believe 405 is just a unbranded english version of the ARA build.

Have you read the bit about pvt4 and erase size? Very important. This dictates which recovery you use.

Are you reading the faq or the guide? Forget the guide for now. Read the faq over and over. It's all in there
