Help Underwater pics

Had my first opportunity to use the camera underwater and as soon as I placed the phone under it changed screen and also would not take any touch commands. Took it out of the water and everything started to work. Tried it a few times with the same thing.
After dunking it slowly I was able to see the camera, but I could not get it take a pic by touching the button on the screen.
I miss the previous phone's dedicated camera button. I even tried to set the tactile button to work the shutter, with no luck. I can set it to turn on the camera, but not work the shutter.
Is there a way to make the tactile button function the shutter? The screen does not work underwater!
The phone is rooted too

The capacitive screen won't work under water, goes haywire.

I've seen some threads here that said nobody has found a way to get the tactile button to take pics yet.

you can rock video underwater, ive done it a few times, just hit record and submerge it. untill someone figures out how to make that tactile act as camera/video shutter, we're up shit creek :(

Well that sucks! Having the tactile button is a waste if a solution can't be found.
Why does the screen go nuts? The previous phone was awesome underwater and never had any of these issues.

With all the folks that know how to make apps nowadays, you'd think someone could come up with an app that does this. Perhaps one of the existing camera app companies could do such a thing.

Still dont understand why the screen goes nuts. It should respond better, I would think, with the conductivity of the water!

exactly why it goes nuts, because of the conductivity. i thought they used both style digitizers so the damn thing would function fine underwater... guess not.

I also got on the casio website and asked the same question
Awaiting their reply.
Isn't the screen the same technology as the last one? Seems to work the same.

Thinking of placing the phone in glove mode 1st and then go underwater. It has different buttons when in camera mode.
The reply from casio was interesting in that they said the phone is water reaistant and not intended for underwater photos! WHAT?
Big mistake if true!

Looking around the Playstore, there are a few camera apps that allow the volume rocker to be the shutter release. I haven't tried any underwater, but one called VolShutter lets you focus with the volume rocker and then takes a picture when you release the rocker (without a shutter sound). VolShutter has no video capabilities.

I'd rather have the Tactile key do the work since it's more 'tactile' but it's a start...maybe one of the developers would be willing to enable the Commando4G tactile key to work the shutter for us...

One thing you can do is apply the Tactile key to VolShutter and then use the volume rocker to take the photo.

Camera ICS (ad supported) does pix and video (doesn't seem to be saving the videos though) with volume rocker (volume rocker is configureable) and adjusts to landscape/portrait mode. Might be the most promising, since it's based on the original camera app for Ice Cream Sandwich. There's an adfree version called Camera ICS+.

Some other apps I haven't tried but seem to use a similar approach as VolShutter:

Camera FV-5 (nice options, but free version limits image resolution )
Camera Zoom FX (claims Customization of ALL hardware buttons) costs $3
Volume Key Camera Shutter
Button camera
Camera Touch-Free

Another camera app that works with the volume rocker is the one from Jellybean. Jellybean Camera 4.3 from Google was extracted as an APK from an S4 and is available for free download (not on Playstore). Comes with the camera and an updated gallery. No root required.

It has an awsome sphere function (Photosphere) for continuous spherical panoramas (which uses the new gallery to view properly.) Spherical underwater scenes could be amazing...

It has a pinch to zoom function also and other goodies.

I disabled the old gallery (v 1.1.30682). The old camera can't be disabled (without root), but when you tap the camera icon on the lock screen, you can choose the JB camera as default. Also, you cannot uninstall the JB camera by itself. It is part of the new gallery, so you'd need to uninstall the new gallery app (v 1.1.40012) to get rid of the new camera.

Unfortunately, video doesn't seem to work in the app and I get an app crash every now and then. Also, HDR isn't available.

Here's one of many articles onthe subject:

Edit: This is almost the same version, but on the playstore, but has no photosphere:
