Help Uninstall Pre-Installed Apps on Droid Eris

I have an HTC Droid Eris with Verizon. It came installed with several apps that not only do I not use, but that in some cases start automatically. These include Amazon MP3, Footprints, Google Talk, Teeter, and YouTube. I would like to uninstall them, but I am not given that option (like I am for third-party apps) when I go into "Manage applications" in Settings. Is there another way of removing them from my phone?

Sorry to burst your bubble, but there is, as far as I know, no way to remove any of the preinstalled apps. I had the same question when I first got my G1. The only way that I could do that is to root (jail break) my phone.
 
I just ran across a application management app that might work. It's just called "App manager" by Best App. It brings up pre-installed apps like you would expect the built-in application manager to do, and appears to give you the option to uninstall. I haven't tried uninstalling a per-installed app.

I was looking for a way to clear search caches, but no luck yet for pre-installed apps like Market or Maps.

I installed it and you're right, it does seem to give the option to uninstall them - but when I choose it, I get an error message saying that it could not be uninstalled. Thanks anyway though! Anyone else hear of anything?
 
To remove pre-installed apps, touch and hold the app you want removed. The phone will vibrate, letting you know that you are in edit mode. Without lifting your finger, drag the app down to where the "Phone" button was, but which now says "Remove". Voila.

That's not uninstalling. That's just taking the shortcut off the screen.

Don't know if it works on the Eris, but this works on my Droid. I can drag the icon to the bottom of the screen and drop it when it turns red. That will simply remove the icon. However, if I hold the icon over the trash can for a second or two a dialog pops up that says 'drop to uninstall.' If I drop it, it goes through the uninstall process and the app is gone.

That being said, I tried it with a preinstalled app and it said the uninstall was unsuccessful.

Almost forgot, I'm running Home++ so it may just be a function of that software.
 
So I assume we can now remove these by just removeing the .apk from /data/app?

Is there any risk removing the apk?

Is there any other location where we should remove other pieces of the app?

There needs to a text based version of the Google Market for apt-get type terminal control :)

this does come up with the option to uninstall, but it when you try to actually uninstall the app you get "Uninstall Unsuccessful" message
 
There is a thread around here somewhere on how to remove preinstalled apps (bloatware)

Be very careful on what you uninstall. I removed all 3 stock apks, default browser apk, stock messages apk, tweeter and twitter apks.

Some apks have to remain the the basic function to work. I believe the default mail app is an example

Yes you have to be rooted. If you have root explorer, you can always copy the apk to your SD card if you feel it might FC your phone. Also, you can do a NAND backup before trying to remove more than obvious apk's. I have removed mms, stock, twitter, foot prints, youtube, just to name a few and no problems.
 
Perhaps we should compile a list of known apk's which can be removed...as well as any other file locations which need removed to complete the removal. Thanks droidkevlar for the start :)
 
I keep getting read only file system errors when attempting to mess with anything in /system/app. Ideas?:
