Uninterrupted charge?

Phone keeps running dead in the middle of the afternoon. I've been shutting it down, leaving it off and fully charging it, but I keep missing calls, txts, etc. Should the phone always be charged without interruption or is it ok on the battery if you leave it on and check IM/SMS, receive calls etc, leaving it plugged in?
 
When I first got my phone and killed the battery alot, I would plug it in and keep playing. Don't worry you wont hurt it.
