univesal ebook reader app

Thanks. I have google on this topic but find that I suffer from a lack of knowledge of the big picture - most of the info that I find is micro- detail. So it seems that the ebook world needs a Ralp Nader, someone to bring standardization to life. I can see myself buying books from Amazon and Barns and Noble. I will be tapping into the public domain supply at project Guttenberg. If I have software to read these formats - along with pdf - will that cover most of my needs?

Yes, but you'll need the Amazon Kindle reader app and and another reader app, eg. Moon+ Reader :)

Amazon Kindle has a very convenient, but closed system: Kindle apps are available for all platforms and the owned Kindle books are synced over all.

Nook from Barnes and Noble has an app as well. I use FBReader for my public domain books and stories. A good repository of Public Domain eboooks and stories is Project Gutenberg, I favor the Science Fiction Bookshelf myself but there are many other categories to choose from. Speaking of Science Fiction Baen Publishing has a Free Library with 16 fairly recent titles in it. They used to have a lot more but they had to limit the selection when their authors works started becoming available on other platforms like Nook and Amazon. Baen was the first publisher to come out with ebooks with no DRM. The Mobi/Palm/Kindle format unzipped download for the Baen books works with both FBReader and the Nook app from Barnes and Noble.

The problem here is the licensing. Usually some companies only allow you to read books from them only from their own readers.

Just to add info that might help some - I now buy from Kobo, but their app doesn't allow the import of eBooks from elsewhere. I then discovered Aldiko. It's a bit more work, as you have to download the acsm of encrypted books, but it can register you with Adobe (which allows the acsm to produce the epub book). I don't know, however, whether it can read Kindle books, as the Amazon range have a different, proprietary encryption. If it doesn't have to be Kindle, consider Aldiko.
