Help Unknown Sources

My husband has a Samsung Captivate and I have an HTC Inspire. The Inspire has a box that you can check/uncheck to allow "unknown sources". I can't seem to find it on his Captivate. Can anyone help?

If the Captivate is rooted, you should be able to go to Settings > Applications > Unknown sources(at the top) and check it.

On the original Captivate, that option was removed by Samsung/AT&T to prevent loading of non-market apps. They have since relaxed their position on the loading of third party apps, but I couldn't tell you if subsequent updates have reinstated that option as I've been rooted for a while.

The option will not be on captivates, there is an update from att that was supposed to enable sideloading but you wont know if you got it until you try installing a non market app. if you did not receive it you can call them and they will push it to your phone

The option wasn't originally on my Inspire either. It appeared after an update from AT&T. Wouldn't the captivate be the same? Not there originally and then the "unknown sources" checkbox would be there if the update is installed?

It seems odd that the captivate would always allow unknown sources and not give you the option to uncheck this feature.

Perhaps when gingerbread is released for the Captivate it will be included as an option.

no there is no checkbox even with the update on the captivate. now when 2.3.x comes out there very well may be, and there are check boxes on some custom roms, but there will not be on any current stock captivates
