Unlimited HotSpot using Quick Settings App?

I don't think VM will work any longer - or at least I am doing something wrong. What I am getting is VERY odd.

I just bot an Optimus V yesterday and registered it. I installed Hotspot Widget, Hotspot Toggle, and Quick Settings. They all SEEMED to work, and I get the indicator on the phone that the Hotpot is Active. However, once I make the hotspot active, when I use the browser on the phone, it takes me to the www.m.VirginMobile.com site. I cannot change it no matter what I do.

I bought it to connect my Asus Transformer to the internet when I'm away from my desk wifi.

The Transformer finds the AndroidAP wifi, and shows it is connected, with a strong signal. It even shows the IP address. But the antenna [sic] icon is grey, not blue. It will not let me get to the internet - no Pandora, no Google Navigator, no browsing, no nothing.

btw, I see the 3G icon, and I have multiple bars indicating a strong 3G connection.

Am I missing something, or did VM make some changes.

Any suggestions how to make this work?

Uninstall all hotspot app except Quick Settings.
Turn on the hotspot in Quick Settings then touch the words Wi-Fi hotspot to the left of the button
Go to Configure Wi-Fi Hotspot and set you Network SSID, Change the security to WPA2-PSK and set a password.

I you still experience connectivity issues, restart the phone and laptop and try connecting again

No luck. It seems to be something hung up with the memory and/or browser. Eventually I get an error message: "The page at 'http://m.virginmobileusa.com' says ... jCarousel: No width/height set for items. This will cause an infinite loop. Aborting ..."

UPDATE: I called VM, and apparently many others had reported the problem of the browser being redirected to the m.virginmobileusa.com address. It was a server problem. They seem to have fixed it as of this morning.

Also, I still had a greyed out antenna icon. I don't know if this had any effect, or whether it was just coincidental but I changed my password in the WPA2-PSK to only letters (I had had letters and numerical digits before) . . . and

IT IS WORKING!. I tried Pandora and Navigation. Both worked. I am beginning to like this phone.

Quick Settings works great for me, it does stop every now and then (and I do have a good network signal) the speed is a little faster then dial up and suits my needs for now. I just worry if someone else can tap into it because you can't configure it to add a password. But other than that it's great!

If there's no password, then yes they can tap into it. And guess what, if someone taps into it and downloads illegal material, you are legally responsible because you are sharing your net access.

Not jumping on you, and certainly not judging. Just letting you know.

Turn on the hotspot in QuickSettings. Drag down the notification bar from the top. Click on "Hotspot Active - Click to configure". Click on "Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot Settings". Click on "Configure Wi-Fi Hotspot". Then set the SSID, security type (WPA2 PSK recommended), and password. A nice, secure hotspot for you and only your closest friends.

Extended widgets anyone? Way better because it also allows you to build your own widget which is similar to powerstrip or something like that. Really customizable, and it's not that expensive either.

My Optimus gets very warm when my hotspot is active. Also, does anyone know how much the battery life decreases when the hotspot it active?

*IF* Virgin Mobile/Sprint decides to leave this "hotspot" feature active in the Optimus V (note that is has been removed from the Optimus S via an OTA firmware update).......
you'll be throttled if you use over 2.5GB a month now.

A price hike, and throttling . . . Knew a good thing was only for a limited time...............

Just a clarification;

The hotspot feature was not removed on the OpS. Disabled until paid for, but not removed. Sprint charges $29.99 a month for this feature, and it is specifically advertised with this phone on the Sprint site. ;)
