Unlock a Hero

I have a HTC hero on a contract with 3. Its coming to an end and i want to carry on using it but on pay as you go on a different network. I'm a bit new to this i've seen words like unbrand debrand and root being thrown around forums but a bit lost. Basically i want to be able to use any simcard in the phone. can anyone provide a step by step guide on how to unlock the phone.

Just to reduce confusion, rooting and branding are nothing to do with the network lock you're referring to. :)

I think you can get unlock codes off the internet for a bit less than 3 would charge, but I don't have any experience with those sites to recommend any.
