Help Unlock Help

First of all let me apologise if this is in the wrong section.

I have just got a HTC Desire S which is locked to virgin mobile, I want to unlock it to any network. When i put a different sim in it is obviously locked but no prompt comes up to enter an unlock code, which has put me off spending money on an unlock code if i cannot enter it.

My question is. is there any way of entering an unlock code if the prompt has been removed? is there any way of re-enabling it to show the prompt?

Failing that, how safe is it to erase and re-install android? it currently has android 2.3.3. can it even be done and would it remove the restrictions put on by Virgin?

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

There are sites offering to unlock (de-brand) the Desire S remotely via the IMEI, but I've not read of anyone having done this successfully. If the phone can be unlocked this way, then the people offering this service would have the answer to your first two questions.

On rooting the Desire S: at the moment this can only be done via an XTC clip. This has obvious risks attached to it, e.g. you would invalidate the warranty.

HTC has not released the bootloader unlock (S-off) software to enable rooting the phone via software. It looks like it's in the pipeline, but there's no indication of when it will be released.

You can keep up-to-date on all things root and the Desire S on the sub-forum here.

panic over, turns out the phone wasnt locked after all, the other sim just needed time for the phone to register it.

thanks anyway though. the rooting might be useful in the future.
