Help Unlock problem - no unlock prompt appearing... force prompt?

Hey guys,

I have an unlock code for my htc desire but when I try and follow the instructions and put in an invalid SIM the prompt does not appear so I cannot enter the code. The phone is still locked. Any suggestions or help as to alternative places to enter the code or forcing the prompt?
