Help unlocking bootloader.anyone else confused?

looking in the root section has really confused me of how to unlock the bootloader... anyone else a little confused?

where are you confused at?

It's kind of scattered around, not to mention there have been a few different posts within this forum and some seem different from others, just getting confused now. Could you maybe post a step by step that's easiest to understand for a windows based pc? Thanks:confused:

There is a step-by-step in the Root forum.

http://androidforums.com/galaxy-nexus-all-things-root/452146-how-root-samsung-galaxy-nexus.html

It's not scattered around - it's in a sticky.

With utmost respect, if you have specific questions, you need to ask specific questions. There's a step-by-step walkthrough that has both a manual and a semi-manual process, so coming back and saying, "I don't know, it's just confusing" isn't going to net a positive result. The steps are there. If you don't understand a step, post up and ask, and we can help.

Also, messing around with the bootloader is really something you should only be doing with a complete understanding of how the process works and what you are accomplishing - so while it may be confusing to read all of the posts, reading them a couple times, asking questions, and gaining a good understanding will go a long way towards ensuring you are successful and happy with the process.

OP just know this.

There is no dumb or stupid questions when talking about rooting. Feel free to ask as many questions as you need so that you feel comfortable doing what you want to do. Just try and provide as much detail in your questions as possible.

We all know a lot of what we know on here because we ask questions. Im a super big fan of asking questions probably to the extreme point just because i want to make sure i understand everything as much as possible. So don't be afraid to ask questions.

Personally i found using the sticky and this link How to: Unlock the Galaxy Nexus Bootloader – Droid Life: A Droid Community Blog (if im not allowed to post that, my bad) together to be most helpful. I couldn't get fastboot to work but thats because i didnt have fastboot.exe in the same folder as the adb which i learned by clicking that link. Now i know how to do it and am ready to go when i get my gnex!

I didn't know how to do it at first as i never used ADB so i was unfamiliar with it, but after doing a little research and reading a few articles, i figured it out and am now confident i can do it.

so are you saying you're on step 10 and see that on the screen of your phone?

If you go to the link in the post above , the droid life link. instructions for windows. 1. setting up the Android SDK {INSTRUCTIONS} LINK. click on that and it takes you to to another set of instructions to download the SDK. goto line #10 there."variable values"section,

#10 and #11 steps are confusing me?

i dont have the phone yet , but just trying to get this portion set up first.

you got me here mate. i installed the SDK 4.0 parts but that is not the instructions i followed at all. i didn't mess around with any environmental variables

You don't have to set environment variables if you just navigate to the directory that you installed the SDK into when typing the fastboot commands.

The environment variables let you type "fastboot" from anywhere, and it will launch the adb executable. So if I launch a command prompt and the current directory of the prompt is "C:\Documents and Settings\binary visions\", I can type "fastboot devices" and it'll work - even though clearly, I did not install the SDK to that directory.

If I don't set the environment variable, I need to actually navigate to the directory with the executable in it - i.e. I can't launch a command prompt, and type "fastboot" from the working directory is "C:\Documents and Settings\binary visions\"

yeah that instruction set is not a good one at all. i simply used the one over at xda. the only trouble i had was with the drivers (which i actually already had installed). but i've posted screen shots on the thread for anyone else who might run into that problem.

edit: this is what i used [HOW TO] Unlock Bootloader & Root GSM Nexus - xda-developers

i was fixing to ask....isnt superboot easier? although those look pretty easy
