Unlocking my hero

I want to use my hero in the states and canada. I am on the telus network up here and I have a simcard in my phone. can i just pop in a sim card from a carrier in the states and use that?

I'm with Rogers and bought my Hero from Telus. When I put my sim card in it asked me for an unlock code. Which I didn't have. You need to purchase one from a cell phone store or ebay. One i put the code in i was good to go. Unlocked for any carrier that it works for.
