Unlocking

I just bought a T-Mobile Optimus T on Ebay and I want to use it for international travel. I don't have a T-Mobile account so of course T-Mobile won't give me the unlock code. I found some web sites that will give me the unlock code for $7-10. But, I'm wondering if I root it and flash a new ROM on it, does that make it be unlocked or would I still have to get an unlock code?

My second question is, can anybody recommend a bare-bones fast ROM for the phone? I'm looking on XDA and there are several to choose from I don't know which one to choose.
Or maybe I should just root it and delete the crapware??

Well putting a rom on the phone won't unlock it. Neither will rooting those are just mods to the phone. You will either have to get an unlock code from tmobile or just buy it for a small price.

I paid somebody on Ebay $7 to give me the code, so it's unlocked now.
