Unmistakable Mainsteams UFO media footage?

There is actually a term for finding patterns and images when none are there. I can't remember it off hand, but I know they've actually done studies on it. We humans are pattern seeking animals just by nature. Sadly, there are not always patterns to be found.

I believe the term you are searching for is "matrixing". While I tend to shudder a bit at using the following URL to substantiate this, it is an appropriate explanation.

Whoa, nellie - here, there, let's have none of that. :D

I believe the term is clustering illusion -

List of cognitive biases - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Clustering illusion – the tendency to see patterns where actually none exist.

Leave it to the paranormals to re-invent words to make it all insider-like.

One of the biggest challenges I face when bringing up a noob physicist or engineer is in convincing them to never search for a pattern in noise - because you will always find exactly what you're looking for, each and every time.

Then again - fractals are interesting. If you spend some time underground, you'll find that many of the exact same features you'll find in the larger caverns and caves set in rock are EXACTLY like those you find in the mud in your backyard after a rain.

And not sure, so for now, I'll just venture that the term for seeing a pattern where none exists is evidence of bias.

I agree. It is also an interesting topic. I think Bias is a good term, Early.

I remember one of those ghost hunting shows that waste bandwidth. An experiment was done to see just how much bias changes perceptions. Long story short, when the experts told the visitors that they were going into an area that was considered a paranormal hot zone, many saw, felt, and heard things. In areas that were "cleared" by these same experts; that is no ghosts or evidence of them, nobody experienced any sightings or odd feelings.

They also had fun with low frequency sound.

OT, but have any of you seen the video that shows a BBall game and a bear walks across the screen and few people notice it. Just thinking that we expect to see men in shorts dribbling the ball and our minds reject the wild life that saunters past the camera.

Some of us see and hear things in the static when TV ends for the night. I never notice the stuff buried in the TV static. But it is interesting when you start to concentrate on the noise and how your brain tries to connect it to something.

I just took on a project that considers the deeper connections between music and the certain algorithms that refines synthesized musical instruments and allows them to recreate far more accurate sounds. Like an oboe and a cello. Lots of talk about how much changing the white noise can make a flute sound much better and fractals are a huge part of the process. Not sure it applies here, just excited.

You a cave rat, EarlyMon? I spent lots of time looking for Vugs and other interesting things in holes and caverns all over Utah. I also adore bats and their homes, so I try to visit as much as I can.

BTW: I recall a fellow that while considering fractals decided that perhaps the fractal can be applied to antenna design. Apparently, he designed such antennas and they are widely used in our cell phones.

I'll find a link, if there is interest.

Bob

Not a cave rat, but I've visited a few and spent some time - my idea was to try as much as I can so I could find out what I like - but it turns out I like most everything. (And bats are very, very cool, ok.)

Most people I've met will attest to seeing patterns in their textured ceilings - faces in clouds, static on TV, same thing (although I still enjoy looking at the faces and animals in the clouds here because we don't get lots of them in desert).

Fractals and musical instruments, eh? Hopefully, you might find something inspiring like this in your area - First Friday Fractals : FractalFoundation.org

Now - who was it that exploited synthesizer noise to go in the other direction than the one you're seeking... back in 60s or 70s...??? Rahsaan Roland Kirk?

I was unfamiliar with fractal antennas - just skimmed a few papers - pretty cool, many thanks!

(PS - I found these comments very interesting (not a paper, but a FAQ I also ran across). http://www.fractenna.com/faq/faq.html)

Wow, thanks for the link, Early. I just learned about the Moon Rabbit. Did not know there was such a thing. Lordy Me.

I am a Stereo Photographer. I use Stereo Realist cameras. When I was first introduced to Stereo Images, I learned to do what is known as 'Free Viewing.' Usually viewing Holmes Stereo Cards sans the required parlor viewer.

What I often noticed is how much patterns bothered me. I ate lunch at a local place in a downtown office building and the manufacturer used a patterned metal on the inside doors. I often found stereoscopic patterns in the metal that few people could see because of the way one viewers stereo cards.

Those 3-D posters so popular a few years or so ago require the same "eye action" for example.

Very interesting stuff, I'll say.

Autostereograms - novox77 and I were discussing those in the HTC EVO 3D - Android Forums just this past weekend.

BTW, I just followed the clustering illusion page down to apophenia and pareidolia. ;)

Yeah - the moon rabbit's a scream. Personally I think that's my Easter basket, not the other. :)

I wish people would check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cydonia_(region_of_Mars)

The early release of the image and the hoopla was due to a process error - the original camera was kinda low-res.

I always have figured that there are aliens out there, just do to the numbers of how many places there are in the universe and it's doubtful that we are the only one with life.

Since we haven't been destroyed or enslaved I figured we are an amusing curiosity at most. I can seeLike the Mooninites from ATHF.

Some of the best 3D images of life or evidence of life on other planets or celestial bodies are the Vectographs taken on the Moon. One image shows the astronaut's foot print and they are spectacular.

I'll check out the EVO 3D forum and read what you have to say. Is it OK if I disagree with some of the comments if warranted? I am a self-proclaimed stereo expert, after all. Smiley

No problem - and as you've asked, allow me to respond with a friendly AndroidForums.com Public Service Announcement:

AF members are free to post in any forum they so choose. You needn't own to a particular phone to go its forum to ask questions, offer help or get to know the regulars there.

Bob - the Evo 3D forum is a little chaotic due to the fact that the phone's not out yet, so topics kinda meander around - fairly normal in a forum where they're awaiting phone arrival.

Suggest you look for posts by and engage with novox77 - he's quite knowledgeable but I'm sure he'd welcome your additional insights. Frankly, we're finding our way through the darkness on much of what's being discussed, so good help is most welcome!

(And avoid posts by BlueScreen - that will be self-evident and no replies to him are needed. ;))

edit - Probably a good place to start and where we'll be most interested in stills is - http://androidforums.com/htc-evo-3d...loaded-flickr-facebook-still-viewable-3d.html

Thanks for the PSA. I know that I can post; just some would rather that I avoid the temptation. You know some of the crap I spew, right? (Big Smiley)

I wont buy an Evo, but it is interesting to consider.

As for BlueScreen, I do not know him, I'll watch out, though.

Always a pleasure, Early.

I've been wondering, can anybody confirm that the video in the OP actually contains real newscast footage? The more I think about it, the more it seems like one of those "viral" marketing campaigns for an upcoming movie. Especially since the OP states the video has been making the rounds on Facebook. I know I recognise some of the newscasters, but those guys do cameos in movies all the time. My tv is on CNN more than any other station, and I can't remember anything about this. The last mainstream UFO story I can remember was the Phoenix lights that were explained away as military flares. As clear as some of the footage is in that video, I would think that it would be big news. Did anyone see any of this before? Or have we fallen for a clever marketing ploy?

Well, I know the cloud ring over Moscow was real, and that their own meteorologists said as it was happening that that was a normal atmospheric disturbance. At least one of the objects appeared to be a bolide, another appeared to be something breaking up on atmospheric entry (the one where the pieces seemed to dance about and merge - the merging is an illusion that goes away when you think of 3 dimensional flight dynamics). Two were obvious hoaxes.

So, no reason they wouldn't be on the news - the primary job of TV news is infotainment.

Sirius and Venus can cause illusions due to atmospheric murk when they rise. People tend to see all kinds of flashing lights. There is also a lady in the moon. And my rabbit is heavenly, but not on the moon. It's called Lepus and the home of Hind's Crimson star and M79.

I think they have found the building blocks of life on meteors, etc, but it's like legos.
You can dump all the legos required to build a certain item, but left to the lego's own devices, that item won't get built. So far all the building blocks haven't come together to show creation of life elsewhere.

Not that we know of anyway.

If they are here they probably came to see a total solar eclipse - what are the chances of finding another planet where that happens?
(OK I stole that from Iain Banks, but still - makes you think!)

@Snedd - That wasn't the only idea like that. It was the criteria for finding Earth in the last of the Asimov Robot series. Only planet with a moon that large. I'm rather partial to R Daneel.

Greatest series of series ever - I like how the the Empire series was tied to the Foundation series, bringing the best parts of his life's work in sci-fi into a complete circle before he passed on. (Even tying in some of his cul-de-sac work such as Nemesis.)

Asimov was a giant among giant thinkers, and it even extended to his work in fiction. I miss him, always.

I made up my mind long ago to follow one cardinal rule in all my writing—to be clear. I have given up all thought of writing poetically or symbolically or experimentally, or in any of the other modes that might (if I were good enough) get me a Pulitzer prize. I would write merely clearly and in this way establish a warm relationship between myself and my readers, and the professional critics—Well, they can do whatever they wish.

BTW, I myself have sported Auroran good looks for some time - this is precisely how dan330 spotted me.
