Root [Unoffical] TWRP 3.0.2 1/25/17

spock1104

Android Expert
Months of kludging and I finally get a working TWRP image! Had to compile from CM sources and get busybox to compile. Not fun. Let's test the heck out of this thing, if it's working right then we can switch the phone to use F2FS and gain a little more speed.

or flashable through recovery

**I claim no responsibility for device damage. In using this software you acknowledge that you use it at your own risk.**

My recommended install method is through the TWRP app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=me.twrp.twrpapp&hl=en or Rashr https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.mkrtchyan.recoverytools&hl=en
Flashify will work too but Rashr doesn't nag if you flash several times.

Found an issue? Please post as much detail as you can about what you were doing and how, and include /cache/recovery/last_log

I'll update this post and title as we determine the stability, for those who don't want to risk it yet.

Confirmed working:
Reboot (lol)
ADB
MTP
external SDCard access
Backup
Restore
Format (ext4, F2FS)
Flash from zip
File Manger (thanks andMego)

If you can confirm any other functionality works please let me know so I can update. Thanks!

existing CM13 builds confirmed to boot using F2FS in data and cache

Changelog:
1/25/17 - enabled Qualcomm Board Support Package (fixes Aroma installer)
1/22/17 - exFAT support (cards at or greater than 64GB)
12/31/16 - USB-OTG support
12/10/16 - First release of 3.0.2

To convert data to F2FS (Must be using CM13):
*****Warnings*****
  • Only the Data and Cache partitions can be converted, for now.
  • using encryption with F2FS might cause a boot loop. Stick with EXT4 if you encrypt
  • This will wipe your internal storage as well. Please copy your files before beginning.
*******************
  1. Perform a backup
  2. Back to home
  3. Wipe
  4. Advanced Wipe
  5. Check off Data
  6. Repair or Change File System
  7. Change File System
  8. F2FS
  9. Swipe
  10. Back to the partition checkboxes
  11. Check off Cache and Dalvik-Cache
  12. Repair or Change File System
  13. Change File System
  14. F2FS
  15. Swipe
  16. back to home
  17. Restore the data partition from the backup you made a few minutes ago
Enjoy your slightly faster phone!

Do I need to do this?
"Now go to TWRP Home >> Settings >> tick use rm -rf instead of formatting, (else while restoring the twrp backups, twrp will reformat the partitions as ext4 again)"

TWRP will detect the existing format and maintain it, so no need to hit that checkbox. In fact, when restoring the data it will even warn you that you're using a different file system than before and that it may not boot.

*edit* it'll do this for the data partition at least. My system partition went back to ext4.
*edit two* the Volt WILL NOT boot right now if system is F2FS. Only data for now.

Found that out the hard way :). Performance is better for sure. Just wondering if my internal was supposed to be wiped? (Don't think I lost anything I needed)

Yes, forgot about that. The internal storage is hosted in /data/media, so changing the file system requires a full wipe. Updated the instructions.

Only cache (you can't change the dalvik-cache since it's not a partition).
Using the file manager from twrp to delete files and doing chmod 0000 to a folder worked.

Dalvik is a folder in cache, both need to be checked to change the file system. At least, that was the case when I did this on my sero 7, so it's what I did on the volt.

Is the random reboot issue gone? Can I use adaptive storage with this? That would be awesome 4gb is frustratingly low. It's great to see that there is still development on this. Great work

It's been compiled from very different source code, and TWRP itself has had a number of improvements, so I hope so. That said, if you find an issue please boot back to system and send me /cache/recovery/last_log

Spock, been following your work on this for several months. After previously experiencing a number of problems with a CM 13 build using TWRP 2.8.7, I stuck with 12.1 until things could be ironed out. Well, today, when I found my Volt began a cycle of rebooting and boot looping on 12.1, I figured as long as I was troubleshooting, I'd see where you were at on your progress.

This TWRP build couldn't have come at a better time for me to try out. After flashing your new TWRP and your 8-19 CM 13 build, things seem to be working out. So far, from what I can tell, my reception seems much more stable than it was on 12.1. Thank you for your continued work on the Volt. I'm grateful for the time you've put into this.

Hey spock1104 first Thank You very much for your hard work on our Volts! Just curious if you think it's OK to safely flash this newer twrp you just did! Has anyone reported any problems yet. I wanna upgrade & flash it. Please let me know of Amy feedback, thanx again!

I've not heard any negative feedback yet but it is a new release. If it's any help I stayed on 2.8.7.0 until this. I've only seen that occasionally 3.0.2 loads slowly, otherwise working well. That said, if you or anyone can report back anything else verified working that I didn't post in the OP I'd like to keep the list updated.

I'm on 2870 now someone did a 3.0.1 or something of twrp months back but ot messed me up so I reverted back to 2.8.7.0 so that's why I'm Leary. Its OK to flash any ROM correct like not just the cm13 Roms.

You asked for help updating the list of working things
I did and I thank you, I'm just trying to fully understand the post. Are you just reporting that the file manager works or are you suggesting a workaround to something? My apologies for sounding dense, the context just isn't coming across to me.
