Root unroot and s-on question.

Hello, I recently bought a htc sensation which I have managed to unlock, root and s-off. Not a quick job, as it also had a locked bootloader on which I spend 2 unfruitful hours on the htc website which never worked.

However I now want to return my desire to an unrooted state with the latest rom installed to sell on. (I realise the benefits of having it rooted but prefer to have it back to stock for selling.)
My desire was originally on orange, with 2.1 installed, updated, ota, to 2.2, unlocked via market stall, and then rooted via your guides.
I have read a number of guides and posts but am unsure of the correct method.
I rooted with revolutionary, with help from this forum, and now have s-off with an hboot of 6.93.1003.
Am I correct in thinking I need to downgrade this to the bravo stock from here; AlphaRev 1.8
also I am unsure about which ruu rom to install once I am ready.
I have read a number of posts but unfortunately they have not being identical to my case or the person has hit problems, to put it mildly.
Any help that can be given would be much appreciated as I would like to do this asap and fear if I get it wrong it may take some time to sort out.

If you want to return it to S-On you need to flash the "downgrader" hboot from alpharev (not Bravo Stock). The others will not be replaced by an RUU.

The easiest way of returning an Orange handset to stock is to run the official Android 2.3 upgrade RUU. I don't think a 2.2 Orange RUU was ever leaked, and 2.1 is very old, whereas the 2.3 RUU gives you an officially unbranded handset running the most recent version of android (officially) available.
 
The 2.3 upgrade zip is correct.

For the downgrade you don't need the alpharev utility - that's for giving the phone S-Off, which you already have. What you need to do is download the "Bravo Downgrader" hboot from alpharev.nl. You then just flash this using fastboot (see the adb and fastboot FAQ, linked from the forum sticky post), then run the RUU.
 
ok. i have downloaded the pb991img file. i have to change this to pb991img.zip. i then put this file and the 2.3 upgrade zip to the root of my sd card. then do my backups, then install the 2.3 rom from my sd card. is this correct.

sorry, run the pb991 file first.
 
just one other point, i have a 16 gig partitioned sd card in the phone which i want to replace with the original 4 gig card. once i have completed the above can i just swop the cards over.

dont know why but the shipped roms download is extremely slow. 20kb/ sec. dont think i`ll be doing this as quick as i need to..

First check the MD5SUM as if this isn't correct it will brick your phone.

Check the renamed PMB991IMG.zip file is named correctly as sometimes if can end up named PMB991IMG.zip.zip

Place the PMB991IMG.zip onto your sd card & boot into fastboot (back + power or Vol down + power then select fastboot & press power momentarily). Fastboot is designed to detect any file named PMB991IMG.zip flash it automatically.

Now boot connect you phone via the usb & run the RUU from your computer. This can be done from fastboot or with android running normally as it takes care of all the rebooting for you. NOTE this will erase all your data & apps.

Yes you can just swap your sd cards over after but don't forget to remove the PMB991IMG.zip file incase it is ever in another phone when you launch fastboot.
 
sorry, didnt realise how involved checking md5sum was. just done a search for it.

ah well, off to sort that out now.

If you are doing it via the PB99 method you need to rename the file to PB99IMG.zip - exactly that, not pb991, and it's case-sensitive. And actually PB99 is run from the bootloader, not fastboot mode.

(If you have fastboot set up it's just "fastboot flash hboot bravo_downgrade.img", then run the RUU).

If you have Mac or Linux it's easy to check the md5: type "md5 filename" on a Mac, "md5sum filename" on Linux, and it will return the md5 code of the file. For Windows there's a link to an md5 checking utility in the toolbox thread ("useful downloads" in my sig). Or put the file on your SD card and use AFV from the market (Android File Verifier). Check that the code matches the one on the alpharev website.

The second catch is that alpharev supply the md5 code for the hboot image, not the PB99IMG.zip. So to confirm that the PB99 is OK you need to unzip it and check the "hboot.img" it contains has the right md5 - if it does, then you can be sure the zip file is OK.
 
Ok lads, thanks for your help. Believe it or not I was trying to do this while making our evening meal, ha ha. (Shift workers)

from what I have learnt I will wait till I am sure what I am doing, instead of rushing into it. I have read a fair bit but a lot does not relate to the desire and therefore makes you apprehensive.

I'd be in a lot of trouble if the wife caught me modding the phone while cooking ;)
 
she gets back from work at 9.15pm. i had hoped to get sorted for then or be in a position to carry it out after dinner.

Good god! Just tried that out. Dragged the file onto the icon like it said, the resulting number is miles away.

Something not right here.

Later in the forum people are suggesting its not working properly. Think I’ll skip that one.

i have not put the unzipped image in, silly me.

ok, back on this now. just tried to download md5sum checker.

i have tried the dec 6 password. not working. had this before then when one of you used it, i could the access it.

or is there a newer one i have missed.
 
ok, i have now checked the md5sum and it is correct.

i can transfer the renamed file to the root of my sdcard along with the HTC_Desire_Android_2.3_Upgrade.zip

when i enter the hboot screen it will autmatically load the PB99IMG.zip

when that is complete, now sure how i will know, i can then load the 2.3 update in the normal manner.

is this correct.
if it fully completes i then delete the PB99IMG.zip

do i have to carry out any of the wipes.
anything else i should be aware of please.

The hboot upgrade will only take a few seconds.

Don't put the 2.3 upgrade on the phone. Unzip it on your PC. One of the things it contains is an "RUU" - a windows program that will reflash the phone.

Boot the phone into fastboot mode (boot while pressing the back key), plug it into the computer, then run the RUU .exe and follow the instructions. That should do the trick.
 
thank you hadron, that is exactly what i did.
i have now completed the update, if anyone is interested. now have 2.3.3 gingerbread installed. i now have a hboot of 1.02.0001 but still have s-off. have to look into that. i really wanted it completely back to sq one.

only problem i had, was somehow the img file ended up on the card as zip.zip. had to delete the zip altogether from the img renamed file and it ended up o the sd cad as PB99IMG.zip. windows must put a zip in automatically !.

anyhow its went ok, so pleased, and will now say to my sons i can root there phones whenever they are ready.

just one thing, i was on the mildwild rom which i think was excellent. i am now missing so many things i was taking for granted. so strange now being on the stock htc.

Still being S-Off is weird - it's the alpharev hboot that grants S-Off, and that has been replaced.

Was it S-On originally? That may seem an odd question, but there were a couple of cases where people bought phones that apparently came S-Off.
 
no, it was s-on, looked at my stored info. my hboot was 0.93.0001

have being looking into this and looks like i may have a problem sorting this.
