I posted this elsewhere and had some kind suggestions but not been able to fix things. This is what I posted.
"I have been having trouble with Maps in that when I try to open it it force closes. Also a few other strange happenings over the last couple of days (unable to ring certain phone numbers, force closing internet applications). So I thought that I would turn off and start from scratch. As soon as I entered my pin code it rebooted again and now all that happens is that I get the HTC logo, followed by the Virgin logo and then it reboots and back up comes the HTC logo and round and round it goes.
It's an unrooted phone from Virgin with 27Mb of memory left. I'd really prefer not to have to factory reset if possible as it'll be a pain to reinstall everything but am desperate to get it back up and running as I feel lost without it.
Any help very gratefully received."
I have tried taking the battery out and leaving for a while. Following suggestions I have tried booting without the SD card and without the SIM but same result. I've tried holding the volume button down when booting and get the menu with the tiny letters but have held off resetting.
Infernal Byte suggested that I might be able to run this RUU from Shipped ROMs
without rooting and it may work. Snag is that I have no idea what that means
. He/she suggested that I ask here.
I got my Desire in January and it arrived with Eclair which I upgraded to Froyo straightaway. I am anxious not to do anything to it which would invalidate my warranty with Virgin so will the above RUU suggestion help me at all?
As you can see, I am stumbling around in the dark here. Have been without the Desire for 36 hours so far and I can't count the number of times I've gone to pick it up to do something
. Would really appreciate any help.

. Been checking all over the net and was sure that it wouldn't work so really chuffed that it did. Thanks all for the push to do it. My Backup Pro has saved my bacon and I have reinstalled all my Market programs. Need to tinker with my screens and setup but am very happy to be doing that as I really thought it was a goner.
