Root Unrooting Eris without trackball scrolling up/down

Crossing my fingers.

Please help me out though - you must have figured something out - Why where you getting those "No Image or Wrong Image" messages, if you never removed the PB00IMG.ZIP file?

No clue...that was the first screen and then when it was checking the "PB" file it was ok...looks like this worked...

Now a question...will she get the OTA update or is this the latest version of firmware?

OK, the next thing after this will be to see if your phone immediately pulls the July 2010 OTA when you first start to configure the phone. I figure it will be 5-6 more minutes before we get there though.

Gimme a progress update.

Leak-V3 pre-dates the July 2010 OTA update/patch for 2.1.

I have gone through a similar process like this before, and I got the "Update Is available" message before I had even entered in the Google account username & password.

Let me know if that does not happen, and we can load that manually, if necessary.

:)

Setting up phone now...looking good so far...will keep you posted...YOU ARE THE FRIGIN MAN...I am naming my third child after you...

Hi everyone!

I have to warn everyone...I don't pretend to be knowledgeable about rooting. I rooted my eris back in August and flashed the XTROM that was out back then and that was it.

I've been using the phone like that ever since. Now, I want to trade it in to Verizon (I already have a confirmation email for $132 from before they changed it).

Now here's where I have trouble. My trackball has ALWAYS worked until I tried the unroot process. Can anyone WALK me through REALLY slow how to unroot with no trackball. I can maybe do it with the usb to the pc???

Thanks in advance...I'm really stuck :(

Wow, old thread. I would actually follow the instructions in Scenario 3 here: http://androidforums.com/eris-all-t...2-custom-recovery-trackball-not-required.html to install a version of Amon's Recovery that does not require the trackball.

Great! I will try this...thank you!

If you are looking to simply return the phone to Verizon, you can also run the "Official 2.1 RUU" from a Windows PC, with the phone connected via USB. That installs software which is current through about May 2010 (but does not include the July 2010 OTA).

Doing that is certainly less complicated than replacing the recovery in order to flash the "FlashBack21" ROM.

You can find that particular RUU (along with OTA updates) at:

[HTC ROMs] Consolidated HTC Eris RUU/OTA/ROM URLs - xda-developers

The RUU you are looking for is the one named

RUU_Desire_C_Verizon_WWE_2.36.605.1_release_signed _with_driver.exe

Because you have a custom ROM on the phone, you should probably have your phone in "FASTBOOT" mode when you run the RUU (cold-start the phone by holding down Send+End until the screen lights up). Make sure the phone is well charged, and don't let it sit for extended periods of time in FASTBOOT mode - it will discharge, even if it is plugged in to the PC.

Since you are returning the phone, there is no real need to upgrade it to the July 2010 OTA, but if you desire to do so (just for the "fun of it"), you can follow the instructions in the "OTA" section of the above thread (renaming an OTA zip file to "update.zip" and using the factory recovery boot) to install an OTA update. The one you would use in this scenario is named

OTA_Desire_C_Verizon_WWE_2.37.605.4_2.36.605.1_rel ease.zip (the "4th Eris OTA")

cheers

eu1...you're a lifesaver! Thank you so much and I will give this a try this afternoon. Unfortunately, I have meetings all morning.

OK, so when I select wipe it gives me 5 choices...

Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe Dalvik-cache
Wipe SD:ext partition
Wipe battery stats
Wipe rotate settings

Which one do I pick?

TIA

My trackball is now working.
...
[ROM][10/20/2010]FlashBack21 v1 -Return to Factory Stock - UPDATED - xda-developers and am about to perform the wipe. Am I on the right track?

that will work; about the same level of difficulty as my prior instructions. See below

1) Make sure your phone is fully charged
2) Get the "FlashBack21" ROM (.zip) file onto the top-level folder your SD card
3) Verify using a file manager on the phone that it is the exact # of bytes indicated in the "FlashBack21" ROM page. If it is not, you made a mistake downloading it or transferring it from the PC
4) Boot into recovery and perform the "Wipe data/factory reset"
5) Flash the ROM from the main menu of Amon_RA.

6) Take your phone back to Verizon.

Yay! So I've completed all of the steps above I got the "Install from sdcard complete". I assume all is good. Is there any way to verify that I'm back to stock without putting all of my info back in the phone?

Ok, so I completed up to step 4. Do I sign back in with my gmail account to get to Amon_RA on my sd card? I know...I'm one of those people who should never have rooted in the first place :(

No that's unnecessary. You actually should wipe/data factory within Amon's Recovery (it is an option in the Wipe menu) and, without restarting the phone, go back to the main menu, go to the Flash menu, and flash the Flashback21 ROM. When that is done, then you can shut down the phone (you can restart if you are really curious to see that it is truly reset) and return to Verizon.

OK, so of course I'm the curious type ;). I restarted and I get an error message "Sorry! The process com.htc.bgp has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again." with the activation screen behind. Is this ok? Thanks again!

And when I try to boot into recovery, I guest a pic of the eris with a red triangle with ! inside.

The error message is a little bit unusual, but based on your second comment ("eris with a red triangle with ! inside"), it is apparent that you have successfully unrooted your phone.

Time to send it back to Verizon now, I suppose.
