Root Unrooting Questions

So, I just rooted my phone because of the bloatware VZW sends on the bolt.

In the back of my head I keep thinking "what if the volume up or power buttons stop working?" Can you unroot your phone if this happens? I saw where scotty helped someone unroot their phone when their screen wasn't working so that is no longer a question.

Also, does VZW care what your running on your phone as in Sense and GB version when you need it replaced via warranty? If they do, I see that some of the files are old. Do you just follow the unroot instructions and then do an OTA?

I HATE "what if" questions.

Another little poll question. How many people have actually had to send their phone in to verizon for a replacement?

Rooting voids your warranty so if you need a warranty replacement for something not caused by rooting like your volume key not functioning then you will need to unroot. The instructions on how to unroot are in the same post as how to root linked in the sticky.

If you need to get a replacement for something caused by rooting like you flashed lets golf in hboot and it deleted your hboot you would need to make an insurance claim

Actually,my unroot files will leave you on the most current firmware. I update them everytime there is an ota. So if you have to unroot, your phone will be as if it had been stock all along :)

Fear not, lots of folks have had to unroot and send their phone back. Just make sure you are honest.. if you break it,file an insurance claim.

There was some hype awhile ago about folks recieving rooted replacements, and vzw said that they do not even check for that. Only that: the phone powers on. The outside doesn't look rediculously beat up. And that the shipping box is still in good shape. For what ever that is worth ;)

1) that makes my life easier.

2) How hard is it to unroot exactly? It seems as though that would be where bricking would occur with screwing up the hboot.

3) I never believe what I hear on the web when it comes to things like that. Who knows whats true and whats not with some of the hear say.

Yeah that is where potential bricking could happen but as long as you can follow directions you will be fine. I'm pretty sure there hasn't been anyone that unrooted their bolt here on AF that bricked in the process. Scotty's instructions and how to's are very well written.

you are 100% correct. flashing the wrong bootloader,or a corrupt bootloader file is the best way i can think of to turn your TB into an expensive paperweight

this is the reason i strongly reccomend in the unroot directions(and any other place it comes up ;)) that a person NOT flash back to an s-on bootloader simply because they want to be "unrooted" restoring an unrooted backup,or flashing an RUU very effectively removes the root app and binary and leaves you on unrootd firmware.

the revolutionary hboot has huge advantage over a stock s-on hboot if youre ever in a soft brick situation. it offers an extended range of "fastboot" commands, and it will let you flash older ruus, not just what youre on or newer. s-on leaves you very little options for recovery.

the ONLY reason to ever flash the stock s-on hboot is to become 100% stock for a warranty claim. for any other reason,it offers no advantage whatsoever.

i agree. if i had to send a device back for a legitimate warranty claim(faulty buttons, etc.) i would defiantely unroot it first. but at the same time,if i knew i hAD broke it by flashing something i shouldnt have,id make an insurance claim, not a vzw warranty claim. IMO this is fraudulant and just drives prices up in the future(not saying youd do this, just speeking generally)

hope this puts your worries about being rooted to rest :)

Worries have been rested :) . I don't have vzw insurance, but I do have renters insurance that covers all damages to my belongings for any reason. :) Deductible is just slightly larger than the VZW deductible.

Make sure to contact your agent and have the phone scheduled on your policy. Otherwise most policies will have a rather low electronics limit and it wouldn't be enough to replace the phone more than likely ;)

More than likely you will need to take the original purchase receipt to your agent to get the phone scheduled.
