Root Unrooting

So I've decided to unroot my phone and take it in for service. I've got some screen separation and now it appears I've got some dead pixels that are really driving me nuts so I'm gonna pull the trigger on it and take it in. I've been holding off because I know I will get a refurb and have had tons of trouble with those in the past, but I can take the dead pixels no longer so...
Anyways, my question is this...can I make a nand backup of my current phone, save it to my computer, transfer it to the new phone, root it and restore the nand from the old phone? It seems like this should work because the phones should be identical, but I can see it not working due to serial numbers etc...
Any info on this at all would be much appreciated.

Simple answer is NO. Complicated answer is NO. In all seriousness there can be big problems restoring a bad from one phone to another.

In order to restore a nandroid backup you need:

1) The same hboot version
2) The same recovery
3) The same phone

It will probably just fail md5sum checks otherwise. Just by having a different phone, you fail at least one of those, and you have a good chance of not having the same hboot version, too.

Your best bet is to use titanium backup to backup your apps, app data, and settings, then use sms backup & restore to keep your sms messages. All of those things will save to the sd card, and can be copied to a computer, and back to a different phone. No, it will not be an exact copy like a nandroid backup, but it's as close as you'll ever get when switching phones.

FYI: If you're on a custom ROM, and don't intend on restoring directly to the same ROM, don't backup/restore settings. It could easily cause a few issues.

EDIT: I'm going to blame wrap's double post, and the fact that he beat me to it on these lame database errors :p

I just wanna let everyone know that trying to unroot there htc evo 4g with the new 3.70 update.
1. Install Htc Sync HTC Mobile Phone Support - HTC EVO? 4G (Sprint) - Downloads
2. Uninstall Htc Sync, all you needed from that is the htc drivers
3. Download this Ruu, for some reason all the other ruu's wouldn't launch on my computer. Shipped ROMs
4. Go to settings on evo an enable usb debugging
5. Plug in evo to computer, set to charge only.
6. Use the ruu an leave your phone alone til ruu says its done.
7. your gonna be running 3.26 so your gonna have to keep updating til you gets the newest update.
Hope this helped!

Crap, ok that's kinda what I thought the answer would be...but you can't blame a guy for hoping right??? Oh well, I've been using Titanium for a while now and you're right it is as close to perfect as I can get. Didn't know about sms back-up, mine always came back no matter what I did...was that a fluke or no. I used all different roms both sense and aosp and never lost them...I am using handcent, does that make a difference?
