Did you look in the root sticky on "how to downgrade to official 2.2"?
http://androidforums.com/incredible-all-things-root/181255-how-downgrade-official-2-2-a.html

S-on / s-off tells you whether security is turned on/off for the bootloader. Having it turned off allows you to install unsigned roms/kernels/radios among other things.
