Help Unwanted Ads in status bar

Newbie
Can any one help?? I keep getting an ad pop up in my status bar, its a green speech bubble with a smiley face, and when I pull the bar down to get rid of it, it takes me to the app market to download a ninja game, which I dont want!!

I havnt downloaded many apps recently, and cannot work out for the life of me thwere this has come from.

Any ideas on how to get rid of it????

it maybe one of those Push Add things.
If you download an App called Addons detector and run that, amongst other things it will advise what apps you have installed that allow these push adds to run. You can then uninstall that app.
I believe it is a way that devs make some cash by allowing advertising of other apps and services.

Not sure if i have got all that right, but I'm sure someone will put me right - and help you as well.

And if you find out which App is doing that can you let us all know so that we can make sure we avoid it or delete it. IMHO it is perfectly acceptable to put ads in free apps, so that I see them when I open the app. It is NOT acceptable to allow them to intrude onto my phone when I am not using the App. And I will simply not use any App that does that.

Or is it just me??

Nope, not just you by a mile I should think, me included.

But from the other side of the coin people are going to say it's not all for free and the Devs need to claw back some money some how. If they don't charge this is a way of doing it.

To be honest, I've got an open mind, but I would like to know before I download or sign up for something so that I can make an informed decision if I want to do it or not.
If that all makes sense.

I used Addons Detector, and it found that GO Keyboard was using the BobGames push notification add-on. I uninstalled GO Keyboard and the smiley face went away.

What a great tool, thanks for let use know about it.

I don't mind ads showing up when I'm using an app, but to have something display on my status bar that I can't get rid of without opening it fully, is not good. Especially when the content is questionable. And I trusted the app developer, not some unknown ad network.

You left out one other factor. With an in-app ad you know that this ad is supporting that app. With these push ads you don't know which app is responsible, it's all done behind your back. If the developer put a clear statement in the app description in the market to say that they use push advertising in order to support the app you could make an informed choice as to whether to install it, but that's doesn't seem to be how people using these systems work. Speaking personally (i.e. not representing AF in any way, just my own opinion) I find this aspect the most offensive.

And your point about not trusting the ad network operator is a good one - there are a couple recent market reviews saying that they got ads for adult apps, which many people would find unwelcome (especially, as one reviewer said, when it was their kids using the tablet when the ad appeared).
