Root UOT Kitchen/Android Theming

I've tried using UOT Kitchen a couple of times now and can't get it to work completely. Some of the statusbar icons don't change and the pulldown background keeps going to a grey even though I set it to a custom color or background from the choices. Also bootanimations from UOT cause bootloops. I've tried MTD and EMMC binaries.

Also, how do you go about theming the elements (such as the pulldown power buttons) that you can't select in UOT? I've dug around the SystemUI and framework-res apks and didn't find anything resembling them.
