Up to date rooting guides?

Hi all, sorry for starting a new thread but I want to make sure I get an up to date answer...

I'm looking to root my G2 (T-Mobile UK's name for the Hero) and install a custom ROM - I waited for the T Mobile official ROM but I've heard that it'll prevent me running root in the future.

Can someone point me toward a good, up-to date guide on what I need to do? I also want to take a backup before rooting so that if something goes wrong in the future, I can revert it to how it was out of the box (assuming this is possible!)
