Help update apps?

I was wondering if app updates only show up once you've been in the "Market" or will the notification come up if you haven't opened the market for quite some time?

I'm thinking the only time I've received a notification is when I'm in the Market. Is that the case?

Other times, I do not get notification, then I'm in Market and I choose "downloads" from the menu and it tells me some of my apps have updates available on my list of downloads. Still no notification.

Yeah, it seems pretty random to me. I've gotten to the point where every morning I just open the market and check for updates.

Before I checked all the time, it seems like it would only check every few days or even every week or so... by then, like 4 or 5 updates were available.

Anyway, yeah, it's a mystery.
