Update Available From Sprint

Nope. I don't have the HTC app check for mail at all, ever. I use the Gmail app to notify me and then I hit the HTC app and tell it to refresh. I don't know if that is why I'm not having problems but I'm not, phone sleeps like it's on Adivan.

Interesting workaround, Don; the sad part about it is that you had to come up with it in the first place. It would be nice to have an HTC/Sprint rep on the forum to bounce all of this off of, and perhaps expedite the Helaing Process, i.e. firmware updates.

On the downside, when you first boot the phone, it takes a very long time for the widgets to update; they do eventually, but it takes longer than before. Also, battery life looks to be shorter than before, though I will wait a few days to be sure.

I got nervous on that too!

Do I have to reboot my phone again after the update?

I can't begin to explain this....

Ever since the update I have been at 100% awake time. Nothing changes that...not even factory restore...so I decided to live with it for now.

Then today of all days, I unplug at 7 am and with normal use I am at 40% battery at 11:20 pm. Yesterday I was in the yellow by 6 pm. Just weird.

Where's my 2.0?

Just wanted to add my experience to the mix after the update, two issues:

1- my phone became very laggy and it rebooted itself few times.
2- my data signal is worse than before, now its jummping between 1xrtt and EVDO a lot.

I talked to Sprint advance tech support and he suggested a factory reset, so I did so and its a 100% better now, still only have three of my apps installed but will keep an eye on it, maybe it was an app? I don't know.

No problem so far with awake time or battery life.

My phone has missed calls, sent calls straight to voice mail (from my other cell sitting right next to it, and from my wife and Dad) and dropped the data signal several times after the update, but it is showing a low awake time. The cell signal seems to go from 5 bars to one bar for no reason (I have an AirRave in my house, and my old Treo always had five bars)

Do you recommend I try the factory reset? Will I have to download the update and start all over again?

I want to love this phone, but it is making me frustrated right now.

Never hurt to do a factory reset and see if that helps (if you can deal with downloading all your apps again), you don't have to download the software update again, for some reason it was there already after the factory reset, I also confirmed it by checking the software version, it should be: 1.56.651.2

I will check how my signal is when I go back to a house I am renting that have an Airave in 2 days and will report back. From what I read online it seems that diffrent phones act differently with the Airave.

The Sprint advanced tech support guy told me that 2.0 will be released after the begining of the year, so I think we will all love our Hero's even more, so hang in there :)

All the best.

Well, nice to hear it is close enough for them to talk about it. Have been holding off on major loading of software -- that big ROM flash will take it all out, sans what you can back up. With the new MR, I am getting about 3 days of standby (24hrs per day) with low phone usage per charge. Anyone else confirm similar results???

Thanks for sharing --- :D

I don't get that long between charges but yesterday I got 14 hours until yellow with some use... I identified the app using all my battery (ebuddy) n turned it off. Lol... no issue if I can unplug and it lasts until I return home. :-)

Regards

After 10 hours today with low use (posting on Facebook, a few emails, a few etxts, one call) I was down to 60 percent after 11 hours. Been on the charger aboyt 1.5 hours, and it is already back to 90 percent.

I've been looking at the awake time - it has been between 12-16 percent, which I understand is great.

WiFi seems to be a problem. Couldn't connect to the WiFi at my Mother-in-law's today, and I did not have 3G up in the Sierra. That doesn't bother me much, because I am seldom without Sprint data services. But it bugs me that if they say WiFi should work, then it should. Same for Blue tooth. These aren't deal breakers for me, but I am hoping 2.0 comes soon, and fixes the remaining glitches.

So I've been running the stock messages app since my phone rebooted from it's update on the 18th. I've noted my average awake time after 168 hours or so of uptime was 28%. Average awake time at any time i checked was between 27 and 33%.

Battery power has been less than stellar after the update, pretty much a guaranteed recharge around 4pm to get me through the rest of the day.

On a whim last night, I re-install handcent, reboot, fire off some texts, check my rss and email and then call it a night.
This morning my awake time was 5%.
3 hours later after light use, my awake time is 9%

Discharge rate seems less, but I'll have to continue to monitor my results.
Looks like I may end up back with handcent heh.

Before the update it took 3-4 rings on the callers end before the htc hero would ring. This is now down to 2 rings.

From what I can tell this update pretty much makes the interface look like the Droid Eris and has a lot of the same fixes they put in to the Eris. (The Eris has the same robot icon and the mute/speaker buttons on the screen as well as the lag issue fixed) I tried the Droid Eris and Moto Droid both for a week on Verizon before I switched to the HTC Hero on Sprint. I was extremely disappointed coming from the Eris to the Hero prior to the update. My biggest complaint was the missing mute/speaker button on the screen during calls and the slower speed. I am extremely excited to see almost all the issues fixed on the Hero.

I am really excited to see what the 2.0 update will bring. I am really crossing my fingers for better Microsoft Exchange sync capabilities. I am disaspointed that is does not use a "push" technology like most modern phones, but does a pull every 15 minutes. This causes delays on e-mails that I expect to be real time. I can live with this for now, but am praying for push technology.

NOTE: The Droid Eris has the same problem as the hero with the new update and does not allow you to turn off the feedback while typing in the phone dialer. Even if the keyboard feedback setting is disabled.

My Hero will come Tuesday from Sprint. Anyone bought one after this update was released? New phones come already updated?

No worries if not, just curious.

No, you'll have to manually update it when you get it.. no worries though. It's pretty fast.

Prior to the 11/18 upgrade I could use settings in the

Applications->Development->Stay awake

to keep the screen totally awake during charging. Since the upgrade, this no longer works.

Has anyone gotten stuck at the HTC screen after downloading the update? I had to pull out the battery &it booted up fine, but the update didn't stick. I tried a factory reset, it got stuck at the HTC screen too. Again, I had to pull the battery. Any help would be great, thanks.

The update took quite a while to complete. However since that time my phone has been noticeable less stable and required many more restarts.

The phone will sit at the HTC screen for about 3-4 minutes after updating, just leave it alone and you should be good.

Ok so since we talking about updating.
Yesterday at about 2 pm eastern time my hero gave me this message:
The network is updating ur PRL. Please wait.
And after 20 seconds it was gone. Did it happen to anyone else? And what does PRL stand for?

PRL = Preferred Roaming List

This list tells your card which towers to look for when establishing connection, including towers from other carriers that Sprint/Verizon has roaming agreements with. As new EVDO towers are installed or new roaming agreements are reached, your PRL will become out of date because it won't know to hunt for these new towers. You may be in an EVDO area, but if your card doesn't have the tower in the list, it won't know to attempt to connect to the new tower!

Your EVDO modem does not automatically "know" to add new towers to its PRL, so it is highly recommended that you manually update your PRL monthly so that you can ensure that your EVDO device is always able to connect to the currently available EVDO towers.

Thanks to evdoinfo.com for this info.

I did the upgrade the day it came out, and so far I am pretty pleased with it, but have noticed 3 things that do not work properly for me, and I did do a hard reset too. When on a phone call and I get another incoming call, and I hit answer it switches me fine to the other caller, but when finished the only option is to end call, when I do that it ends both calls, not just the current one. I even waited and didn't hit end call and still get disconnected from the first caller.
The other thing I noticed after the update is that I do not always get the sound notifications especially for email, and I am using the devices gmail app for gmail, but I do get the flashing light indicating a new message. This happens about 50% of the time.
The only other issue I noticed is that occasionally when trying to dial a number to place a call that there is a lag when pressing the first digit of the phone number, and also a definite lag when trying to dial a number when a new email or sms comes in at the same time while dialing.
Anyone else have these problems?
Other than that all else works well for me.
