Help Update disaster

Today I updated the firmware though Kies, I thought I had backed up everything so I down loaded the update only to have problems with it, to cut a long story short, after taking to Samsung I did a factory reset, I now find that none of my Apps have been saved by Kies, so have gone into the play store to re-install "my" apps, they seem to be downloading but not installing. Even when I go to the ones that are installed they all need updating so I hit the update button only to have it say it is updating but it's not actually doing anything, just keeps flashing 'updating'.
If i go to the Samsung Apps it keeps asking to update Samsung account which I have done but it just keeps coming back to that screen and wont let me download any Apps.
What have I done wrong I presumed that Kies would back up everything.
I wish I could go back to the previous firmware

It can take a long time for all your apps to update. Some will install automatically. Others will need your permission. Just leave it on overnight and let it do its thing.

I factory reset it twice last night then on the third go it went through the registration process OK then I just went onto Google play and put all the apps on again one by one, although they were downloading and installing quicker than I could go through them, so I don't know what I did different. I take it Kies doesn't back up apps or books that I had on there then, as I hardly had any contacts or music on there it hardly seem worthwhile using Kies, or am I doing something wrong?

Google restore works when it "wants to" it seem most of the times hit or miss
