Update Google Maps, Gmail ?

I'm coming from a HTC where I can Google applications like Maps, Gmail etc in Market and update them. On the X10 they are on the phone, I don't seem to be able to tell what version they are and they don't appear in my list of apps in market ? Silly question perhaps but how do I update them ?

Google Maps is on both X10 & X8 My apps list on the market and when an update has been required it has appeared automatically.

My X10 is on UK TMobile and the X8 is world generic.

You might want to think twice before updating Google maps as there are problems with the latest update.

I found that the Search function no longer worked and according to the comments in Market so have many other people. I uninstalled the update and it all works correctly again.

I seem to be about to update everything except for Gmail. It can't find it in market and it won't tell me what version its running. On HTC's you can get 'about' information and get to the market version to update. Any ideas ?
