Root Update on the process from VM to Ting!

After cancelling my VM service I'm still getting told that my ESN is being held up by VM. Apparently the phone is "exclusive to vm service only" but then again HOW did PiERiT do it because he succesfully ported to Ting??! I was looking at his post and I was thinking, "Perhaps his phone was not activated" but actually it looks like he did have VM service and then he made the switch. http://androidforums.com/evo-v-4g-all-things-root/695454-move-ting.html

Uggh I just want this to work. My esn is clean with VM though but Sprint doesn't want VM phones on Ting, but PiERit's case starts the mind**** again... I'm lost...

It looks like he hasn't been on the forums since March but I would love to talk to him, I wish he would have explained the whole process a bit more clearly... However it looks like he didn't have to do any reprogramming, beside just flashing the prl and the rom, which you've guys have helped me out already. I sent him a pm... But is there anything I can do regarding the esn?

I've looked into this. Looks like no Boost or Virgin devices can be used. Second item in their FAQ here.
https://ting.com/devices/bring

If you look at the whitelist.. It says the HTC Evo 3D is compatible.. So in theory it could be done, If someone knew the process.

I dont get it.. They say they cant use Sprint branded devices, Yet the 3rd question is the procedure to port a sprint phone.. LOL.

I believe it's the hardware's ESN that's locked into Virgin. I don't know if it's possible to change that no matter what PRL and ROM is used.

You can, But I think you need a sprint donor phone. I think its a very complicated process to go through to achieve this.

Only thing I can think to do is PM the person who successfully did it. They should get a notification in their Email that they have a new PM on here. (since someone said he hasnt been on in forever)

I hope he does get a notification in his email because I'm really curious about this whole ordeal now. Hopefully he clears things up. I know remanifest was interested in Ting as well so let's see what happens. Unless someone else can jump in and provide some other info, I'm stuck..

If you read closely at what he said, "VM phones are not officially supported, but if it's rooted and flashed to a Sprint-based ROM, I don't see a reason why it wouldn't work?", It looks like hes not even sure if it works with virgin mobile, so im guessing he had a sprint htc evo 3D, thru sprint, not VM.

He made the thread to share his refferal link from ting, as he gets credit for each people that gets new service with his link.

Pretty sure he either had a Sprint Evo 3D or he flashed the Evo V to Sprint by using a donor phone.

Go and check your PM Jmstrat.

Thanks guys for all your help. So it can be done, but buying donor phones starts being too much of a hassle, what im going to do is sell my evo and buy a sprint evo. Lesson learned though and I thank you guys again for always being so helpful, ill stick keep coming to the forums.

I'm curious, why are you switching to Ting? Is it for roaming? It's gotta be...as I chose 500 minutes, 1000 texts, and 1 gig of data, and my bill was already $44 plus surcharges. I did see how adding a line is just $6, and I suppose everything gets shared so two people with minimal needs could possibly save money...

Oh, and I suppose being able to use Sprint phones is also a plus...especially the Samsung GS4 or the HTC One.

With VM I never had a strong constant signal, always got stuck with a piece of shit 1x stream. Anyways I don't know if it's because I did something to the phone but I just couldn't take it anymore. Calls always fluctuated and I felt I should have ditched VM way earlier but I didn't know about Ting until I started listenting to the JRE podcast. Anyways I just got an s3 and things are looking better.

Very sorry jmstrat. I haven't visited this site in a long time, and I never got any emails for your PMs.

I did it with both my phone and my mother's phone with zero issue, so I'm not sure why it isn't working for you. We were both on VM at the time, and we both had a Sprint PRL/PRI/radio, as well as Mobster's ROM.

All I did was go through Ting's BYOD page, then I followed this tutorial, and everything went smoothly. If it no longer works, VM or Ting did something to disallow transfers.

Again, very sorry I couldn't help you through any of this. :(

Edit: Both of the phones were purchased on launch day and had the Sprint logo on them. If you had one of the later revisions without the logo, that may have had something to do with it?

He made the thread to share his refferal link from ting, as he gets credit for each people that gets new service with his link.

I don't appreciate your tone. My referral link was added to the post long after I created the thread. When I initially made the thread, I didn't know if it was possible, and wanted to see if anyone else had done it. When that didn't pan out, I tried it myself, and added the link in case anyone else wanted to switch, as it would give them credit too. For what it's worth, nobody has used the link.

PiERit!! It's all good man. I actually got an s3 today (I had a sprint evo but I had to return it because it was malfunctioning)... Anyways because your phone was sprint branded that explains a lot! So they are different after all, that ******* sucks, when I bought the evo like 1 month after it came out, I thought it was "unlocked", I guess I found out that's not true, but It's not the end of the world.. In fact I don't know what to do with it now, but thanks for replying back man!

That's not the problem, there's absolutely no difference between the Sprint and Virgin branded phones other than the silk screening. None.
