Update rumors

The exact tweet from HTC

"The rumors are true! Hero will be getting an Eclair update. We ask for your patience as we update Sense for the fancy new Android OS.3:15 PM Oct 28th from CoTweet"

No mentioned of a fix or 1.6.

Before that the Hero news was

"There is still no new information on future updates to Hero. That doesn't mean their won't be updates, just no new info right now.12:15 PM Oct 20th from CoTweet"

Infer what you will. I'm about to hit my 30 days soon but I don't have any plans to change anything. So far the bugs are annoying but I'll hold on knowing an update of some sort is on it's way. Even if I have to wait a bit longer for 2.0. If it takes to long, I may just root it.

HTC said they are skipping 1.6 in favor of 2.0. They also said be patient because they've got to get Sense UI ported, so I doubt this 'patch' coming is 2.0 or 1.6.

Also, the Eris on Verizon is getting a patch on December 11th, which would be roughly 5 weeks after it's launch. I would hope that the Hero on Sprint gets such good treatment, which would mean a patch available next week, given its Oct 11th launch.

Unless we're surprised by HTC with a 2.0 update for Eris and Hero (which would be smart for sales of Eris on Verizon and Hero on Sprint if HTC did it), I am going to hope for a patch soon, then a 2.0 update to look forward to later. :-)

i'm a bit surprised that they're taking a long time to release this patch. so if i'm reading factual information, HTC coded the patch and gave it to Sprint to release awhile ago. i would think that this patch could be tested and ready for deployment within a week since they probably have enough engineers to complete the job in a day. they must be experiencing some difficulty in getting the deployment ready.

I'm sure Sprint *could* turn it around in a week, but if they assign it a low priority, it could take months. Plus, do we know if Sprint has to send their changes to HTC for approval or testing? That could add some time to it.

Well as I stated over at the Sprint forums....Sprint has had this update more than ample time to thoroughly test it. My feeling is that it has been put on the backlog to download because of the 126mb Palm update that started going out Sunday. Palms update was only added feature additions and ours are critical. Makes no sence why they would push Palms update first but I truly believe this to be the reason we are not seeing the update yet. I would go so far as to bet money on it if there was a way to know for sure.

Sprint and their history with updates should leave us happy just to be receiving an update at all.

That said... I fear all and all that even once the Sprint 2.0 Android update is released it will contain just as much garbage as they put on the phone now with no choice or option to uninstall them. Probably lacking some fundamentals too like BT file transfer and SD card storage for apps & memory opt.

This will leave us little choice but to just n
bite the bullet and Root the phone and use a 2.0 version made by ingenious others with minuscule resources... how embarrassing for Sprint!

I love the Hero... Hate Sprint... Haha...
a love hate relationship at best.

I don't suppose it's occurred to anyone that maybe Sprint found that HTC's patch wasn't suitable for release yet? The purpose of testing is to, well, test it. Not rubberstamp it. The most likely explanation for a delay is that Sprint notified HTC that there is a problem with their patch.

Sorry, that is just not plausible... SPRINT couldn't tell anyone their patch was good or not, they're a service provider, not hardware manufacturer. They tell the Manufacturer what they want, but doubt they could tell it was suitable or not. Maybe it's just not suitable or playing nice with their junk they throw on the phones. Sprint's track record with the update issue (not just the Hero) is well known. They are probably just waiting to coincide with the Droid update... or whatever, when it comes... it will come. This update is a minor one, so no big deal. Anyone here already has a fix or workaround to the issues they will patch.

Apparently you are new to Sprint and dont understand the absurd "thinking" and the bureaucracy that is Sprint. If Sprint is testing the update and God forbid tampering with it....rest assured...for every fix, there will be 5-10 new problems. You think I'm being dramatic...no. I'm not...I lived for a solid year with the Instinct and I can tell you that what I just stated above is exactly what happened with the Instinct on all 7 MRs over the course of a year.

Oh cmon, the Instinct was Samsung and the Hero is HTC. You can't compare apples and oranges like that. The Instinct had alot of problems that needed fixing when you got it in your hand. Although the Hero has some issues they are not bad enough for me to even think about trading out for another phone.
This is a completely different phone OS and manufacturer, I think we should withhold judgement until we see the first update at least.

I agree. However, if we're still waiting at Christmas, I'll be annoyed.

No, I'm not new to Sprint, and I'm not naive either. I'm just not prepared to jump to conclusions or believe in corporate conspiracies without proof whenever a simpler explanation can be found. As a systems analyst myself, I certainly find it reasonable to think that the customer (Sprint) could have discovered a problem with the vendor's (HTC) software. My company finds problems with our software vendor's programming frequently.

And I work for an ISV, and agree whole-heartedly with the above.

There is also the truism that "all software has bugs", and the QA process is NECESSARY.
