Is it possible to download a new version of an app with losing the old one by updating, and if it can be done, how?

Are you trying to update an app and lose the previous updates?

If so you can uninstall the old version and install the new version fresh.

Or are you trying to avoid updating an app? That is easy if you just go into the playstore and in the settings change the update apps to never auto update applications.

It's complicated...what I want to do is have two concurrent versions of the app because each has features that I do and don't like.

I'm not sure you can do that with one device, simply because the app(s) would use the same folder for app data. Even if you could get the app running twice, there would likely be conflicts and force closes as they fight each other over the app data.

App backup and restore will let you keep and old apk of the app...Do if you don't like the update you can go back. Doesn't work with paid apps unless the license key is separate.
