Update to 2.3.5

Virgin Mobile is slow on the updates for many phones. A lot of the other LG Optimus phones got 2.3 updates, but the LG Optimus V (from Virgin) has not as of yet. I wouldn't count on an update until you see it.
Many times they say they are working on things, and that may or may not be the truth. But I wouldn't get my hopes up unless you see them announce it officially.

Seems to have gone fine. New lock screen, more free space for apps (yay!).

Hmm, I can't help noticing we're in the same country, but I still haven't been offered this update. I keep manually checking, but nope, nothing available. Is yours a sim-free handset?

I'm wondering if only those obtained from mobile networks are getting the update.

To my knowledge, the Desire S and the Desire HD are also getting the 2.3.5/Sense 3.0 update too so they may have staggered the rollout slightly to ease the load on their servers.

As far as I'm aware, they're aiming to have it completed by the 15th so you'll (hopefully) get it before then.

I wish it was SIM-free then I would not have Vodafone crap on it... I got my update after checking manually last week.

I gone from having 15->20 MB internal storage free to currently having 47 MB free.

Thanks for the info. I hope you're right!

Oh that's great news! The limited storage space was getting really annoying. HTC make me nervous when they start talking about updates. I had the original HTC Wildfire and will never forget their marketing guy mentioning during July 2010 that an update would be "coming soon". It didn't actually arrive on my sim-free handset until January 2011.

At least I didn't hear about this one until they actually started rolling it out.

Hi schadfield,

I just did a manual check and got a note saying that an update was available. I then tried downloading it via WiFi but got an error saying that it couldn't be installed. Out of interest, did you use your Vodafone mobile data connection to download it?

Thanks in advance.

I used Wi-Fi. Downloaded and installed without any problems.

When I tried to update again, I don't think it was an update to 2.3.5. Instead, the 'Details' button said it was an FOTA Client update and an FOTA Scheduling Application update, whatever they are (I'll check these out). It still didn't update successfully, though! :(

Since writing the above, I have discovered that FOTA = firmware over the air. So, that would suggest an update to 2.3.5. Just need to get it to work now!

Hi Folks,

I've now tried updating the firmware using both WiFi and mobile data - to no avail. When I check for updates, it confirms that updates are available to both the FOTA Client and the FOTA Scheduling App. But then it goes on to say that an error has occurred during installation. I take that to mean that the download has worked OK but something has gone amiss during the installation itself. Unfortunately, all it says is that an error has occurred. Not very helpful.

Don't know where to go from here.

Ideas, anyone?

I have some further questions about firmware updating. As I'm new to Android and smartphones, if I update to 2.3.5 (from 2.3.3), does my data get erased in the process? Is it necessary to do a backup beforehand? Do I need to do anything else before the firmware update? One other question - are firmware updates reversible in the event that something goes wrong?

Thanks in advance.

All my data and installed apps were preserved fine. I have no idea if the update can be reversed.

The update finally arrived for my sim-free Wildfire S this morning (17th). Android version is 2.3.5 and I'm digging the new lock screen. It didn't free up any storage space :( but the UI feels more nippy. Not sure if that's my imagination though.

I have tried upgrading to be told that I need to free 25mbs. I cant see how I can achieve that. I have upgraded to Sense 2.1

I have now successfully upgraded. Have less memory than I did before for apps. Always deleting data so I can sync. You need at least 10% free for sync to work. Thinking of changing phone. :(
