update..yes or no??

hello...i am new to this site.I just recently purchased a samsung note.Been doing some reading and hearing mixed opinions on whether or not to upgrade from ginger bread. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks

If you have to ask, then I would recommend not updating (yet). The speed improvement is only seen by some users, there is a bug in ICS that can permanently kill the memory of the phone and some people are seeing poor performance and worse battery life. If there is something that you are waiting for then it may be worth the risk, but I don’t know of anything.

Hope this helps...

Regards,
Eric Ritchie.

If there is some kind of memory bug as you say do you think Samsung would continue to deploy the ICS update to over 7 million customers? Where is the proof? I have no battery issues, no video "black crush" problems, in fact no problems. From my experience ICS on the Note is great!

Massive yes from me, I've seen a massive improvement everywhere apart from the battery which you can solve by figuring out what is corrupt (for me I forgot to kill social Hub after installing the update and drained my battery a few times, also deleted apps I don't use and installed a few again) or getting another battery as back up.

The pros outweigh the cons on this.

Well lucky for you, my note is brand new and the update has spoilt my galaxy note experience.

ps you dont work for Samsung by any chance do you?

Well, there are the links contained within this post which includes evidence from one of the most respected members of the Android community and one of the Google devs.

Certainty Samsung took it seriously enough to release the source code for their proprietary components which scares the hell out of me as a developer.

Ok, each to their own I guess. If you want to risk your phone then great. I personally, have grown to like it to much (despite the minor inconveniences of GB). So, no update for me.

If you bought your phone from a local vendor then returning it when you delete some files and brick your phone will probably not be too much of an issue for you. Since it happens randomly (but infrequently) Samsung will be playing the numbers. Better to replace a few thousand handsets that take the negative press of a recall.

I have no connection with Samsung. I almost bought a HTC One X to replace my HTC Desire and my tablet is an Archos 80 G9. I have a Samsung TV, if that's relevant...

Negatives always hog the headlines. Good news gets less of the spotlight. I'm just telling the truth of my experience. People are always suspicious of change so the first thing to blame is related to change. Usually there is a different underlying reason or reasons.

I have to agree with Ian, I upgraded yesterday OTA after doing a factory reset and so far very very pleased,
I woke up this morning to find battery had lost 10 % overnight but on looking at the stats the samsung push i had installed had used 39% of battery usage, so I deleted that, and 2 hours later the battery level hasn't dropped
would recommend a factory reset first so its a clean install
I'll report back with battery usage after a few days usage

to use "my story" i think samsung push service has to be installed or it will not load.
I just go into settings>battery> and it shows a basic usage, mine showed samsung push having used 39% but more important it stopped the phone going to sleep

I've already been fairly vocal in other threads regarding my genuine disappointment with the Note. Laggy performance, random crashes etc. I read various other users experiences and some were reporting their phones to be the opposite of mine - fast operating, graphically very smooth etc. I also read other users experiences regarding the ICS update - some going just fine and others going disastrously wrong. Ultimately I decided I had nothing to lose so I did the update a few days ago. It has totally transformed my phone. It is now quick in operation (no 3 second lag starting an app), graphically it's totally smooth when scrolling (it was very jerky before) and the battery life is no different. So, the ICS update has finally turned my phone into the phone I hoped it was going to be when I first bought it. So, to answer the op's question, in my case it's a definite yes to doing the update.

However, it does seem like it could indeed be a risky option. You simply can't ignore the quite large number of users who have had an utterly miserable experience after they've updated to ICS. I know there are an infinite number of differences between two users phones (ie no two are the same), so what works just fine on one sometimes won't work on another, but it does seem that Samsung just aren't interested in either acknowledging or addressing the problem.

I just got my note about 2 weeks ago. Have not got the upgrade yet. I' m not looking forward to it either. If there is not a problem with the software then everyones phone should work the same. After all all the phone are the same just differant colors. I used to have a htc vivid and after I did the upgrade to ics on it I had one totally screwed up phone. I sent my back to att 3 times and ever time I got a new phone did the upgrade had same issues. I finally upgraded to the note have not had any issues. I may never upgrade my phone if I can get by with it.
