UPDATE Your G1 manually

hmm, looks intresting. I'll have to try it later when i get home, tired of waiting to get the update automatically.

I noticed that this info didn't seem to be widely known here so I thought I'd register and share the wealth.

I've just done this and it works perfectly, takes about 10 minutes to do.

Overall it seems like the phone is more stable and smoother in operation, we'll see how it does over time.

If it works for you, post back here to let people know it works!

I tried this and it didn't work for me... did what you post Insert the sdcard to phone and press the home key and red off/on key at the same time(hold it in)
Insert the sdcard to phone and press the home key and red off/on key at the same time(holding it in for over 1 min and nothing happen)

i'm getting the same error message as Sgior13 no matter which file i use...i've been renaming after i drop it on the SD card in the root directory.

i have been transferring to the SD card with the usb cable -- not using a mini SD card reader on my laptop

any ideas?

Yep, same error for me too: E:can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1

Oh well, I guess I can wait 10 more days, but what a bummer!

EDIT: I got it to work, updating now. I had another MicroSD card laying around, so I formatted it with FAT (not FAT32) and named the file update.zip.

are you using the factory 1gb card in your phone?

A lot of people who are running into this problem are using the 1gb car that came with the phone. if you can try another car.

good luck

Ok I have the file on my pc, have it renamed to update.zip but when I try to drag and drop it on the sd card it says file protected and wont let me go further. What do I do?

I can get the file to download but it wont transfer to the sd card. It says "protected file. remove protection and try again" How do I get around this?

So, has anyone successfully used GPS (or even tower-based positioning) successfully since they manually updated? Mine doesn't seen to be working. :(

I used positioning in the Maps app about 20 mins prior to manually updating, and now it isn't working. I even applied the update a second time to make sure it was applied correctly and both times it worked fine, but still no positioning. Any ideas?

make sure GPS if turned on. i know a lot of things were turned off after the update
Yeah, I tried that. No luck. Anyway, even if GPS is turned off it should use triangulation to find my approximate position. That didn't work either.

I'm doing a factory reset to see if that helps. I'll post my results.

EDIT: Nope, that didn't work either. :( :(

EDIT AGAIN: Ok, I lied... It's working now. Man, I was worried there for a minute!

I have the file downloaded to my pc. When I go to drag and drop it on my sd card, it says pretected file remove pretection and try again. How do I get around this?

it was the factory installed microSD card -- once i tried a different one the update installed no problem.

thanks for the hint --

Thanks a million++ for this, just tried it out and it worked 1st try for me, naming it update didn't work though, it had to be update.zip for me. But now I'm running 29 :D
