Root update

No. If you have an unbranded phone running Android v2.2, you should get an OTA update by the summer to v2.3. In between, you can get minor updates from HTC.

However, if you root then you can use custom ROMs with the latest Android v2.3.

Also note, if you DO root, do NOT get an OTA update.

To clarify DNick's point, when rooted you could still be offered OTA's DO NOT INSTALL THEM.

Thank u very much the reason i ask is im runnigng on 2.1 and when i check for software update on my fun settings there's no updates but i know the most people are on 2.2 or newer software.

Then most likely you have a branded phone. Your carrier has modified the phone software is is unwilling/lazy to provide the update for v2.2.
Contact the carrier to see when can they provide the update.
