Hi,
When I bought my Xpedia X8 recently, I had some wifi config issues. I thought I would share three WiFi apps that helped me.
Things you need to know:
Xperia X8
wireless: 802.11b/802.11g - 802.11g is prioritized over 802.11b
security: Open Open WEP Shared WEP WPA Personal and WPA2 Personal
channel range: 1-10
Newer N Router Settings
802.11N --> 802.11b/802.11g compatible [set router to <auto> or sacrifice speed for stability set to <802.11b/g> if you have problems with <auto> scanning all three ranges all the time]
Security --> <WEP> not <WEP2>
channel range 1-16: any channel from 1-10 NOT <auto> because it might auto select a channel higher than 10.
Wifi Analyzer <-- here
Wi-Fi Analyzer can scan nearby wireless access points and show which channel has the best signal and least traffic. Wifi Analyzer is a handy tool which helps you to choose a better channel for your wireless router to ensure the least interference and better signal strength.
Usage
<install> Wifi Analyzer
hookup you phone to wifi
<launch> check your channel, overlaps & interference -> you will see your network in "red"
<change> your router channel to one that has less interference (overlaps).
from the picture above:
channel 1, 6 and 11 are the channels to avoid -> reset to 3 or 4 or 8 or 9
SpeedTest v1.7.4 <-- here
SpeedTest is an app that you can use to consistently verify if your Internet service provider is delivering the connection speed they promised.
Usage
<download><install><launch> the Speedtest app
to check your internet speed via wifi <click><begin test>
Example
You may be paying for 10MB [downloads] & 1MB [uploads] internet service
Your test may give you results of 9.45MB [downloads] and 0.9MB [uploads] these speeds are acceptable.
Note: that your service provider maybe throttling internet speeds during peak periods in your area, so don't test during those hours
Wifi File Explorer <-- here
Another app that helped me out a lot is Wifi File Explorer.
WiFi File Explorer manages your android phone's SD Card from a Web Browser. I often rush around and forget my usb cable. With WiFi File Explorer you can transfer files and manage your SD card contents across a Wi-Fi network.
Usage
<install> Wifi File Explorer
<connect phone to wifi>
<launch> Wifi File Explorer
<launch> laptop/PC web browser
<type> the exact url address seen on the app in the address bar of browser and press <enter>
And you will see an interface on your web browser that allows you to manage your phones SD card.
And that's it...
cheers
