Root Updating CM7 prerequisites

subsist

Newbie
I'm a bit out of the loop with my rooting stuff having been far too busy. I'm about to update CM7.0 with a new apk but I can't remember what I should be doing!

Am I right in thinking I must download and install the zip for CM7.1 from the recovery menu? Or should I unzip and place that(those) file(s) on my SD?

Obviously nandroid is a must, but I'd like to have all my old apps/widgets/layouts intact. This is done through titanium backup if I remember correctly, but do i need to have all the apps on the phone memory when I make titanium backups?

Also, will I need to reinstall google apps and where can I find a zip/APK for this?

Sorry for so many questions, I have a lot of gaps in my rooting knowledge.

You remember it correctly. Make a Titanium backup (to be able to restore widgets and applications later), then download latest CM and Google apps from attached wiki-link (first is for CDMA Desire, second for GSM version), go to recovery, make a nandroid backup if something goes wrong and follow the described procedure (including Google apps download and installation).
Sorry, but I don't know if Titanium makes also backup of apps saved on SD card (I have all my apps in phone memory, 304MB is enough for me:-).
Theoretically it should be possible to skip wipe/factory reset (ie. don't delete all apps and settings) and install just system, because the system is still 2.3, it was working in my case. If you want to try this, SKIP the "Wipe data/Factory reset" step in CM procedure and make "Wipe Dalvik cache" before flashing. If the system doesn't respond then, you can still make full flash with factory reset later.
