Help Updating firmware version

mightyy

Newbie
Alright so under "Firmware version" it has 2.1-update1.
My aim is to update it to 2.2 Froyo, but whenever I check for system software updates, it says I'm up to date. Help?!

It's branded with Telstra but it's been unlocked and I'm currently using Vodafone. I thus assume this is the reason why I can't get updates as they would come from Telstra - is there any other way to get it directly from HTC? My phone has not been rooted.

Thanks

What sim card is used has nothing to do with it. Vodafone sim, telstra software, your update will come from telstra (as that is how your phone identifies itself).

Did Tesltra release 2.2?

Well you can get a shop to manually do it or download the official RUU here:

http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Bravo

RUU will wipe your phone though

If I've backed-up all my data to my SD card (at least I hope I have! The box is ticked!) Will the data automatically be reinstated after I'm finished updating? Or will I have to do some fancy stuff manually to get all my data back?

Fancy stuff. The best way is temp root using visionary+ then titanium backup

Excuse me while I stick a huge "wtf?" sign on my forehead. I have no idea what that means :P

So if your backed-up data doesn't reinstate itself, what then, is the point of actually having a back-up function?

EDIT: apparently there is an easier way to do it via PC Sync tools. it says that I can just restore the data back using this.

When I connect my phone to my PC and hit "HTC Sync", it thinks for a while and says that it's unable to find HTC Sync on my PC. (I only just downloaded the newest version). Ideas?

I cant see any point in it. The option isnt even in 2.2. Its only aupposed to work after factory reset and seldom does anyway. this is a whole new install like on a pc when you put the windows disk in and reinstall the OS>

Titanium backup needs root permissions but the app visionary+ gives temporary root permissions which will allow you to back everything up.

Ah okay. So re: my question about HTC Sync - any ideas on why it may not detect my phone and my phone doesn't detect it? I only recently installed it so do I need to restart my computer or something?

No idea. Havent used that crap for ages. Use myphone explorer as a better alternative (apparently)

Okay so I've downloaded Visionary+ and Titanium.
Hit "Temp root now" - looks like Visionary is just repeatedly opening??? After a couple of said "re-opens" it goes back to the Visionary menu...
How do I know if my phone's been temp rooted?

EDIT: been trying it a few times, currently stuck with a black screen. bah, what am I doing wrong?!

EDIT2: disconnected my phone from my computer and it seemed to work okay.

Another question: if you plug your phone into your computer and copy all the files, are you copying all your apps/data etc?

semi managed to get it to work, only when I try and fastboot > bootloader as it tells me to, it doesn't appear to do anything. I just end up going back to the original screen with:

HBOOT
FASTBOOT
RECOVERY
CLEAR STORAGE
SIM LOCK

what the heck? :(

Am now stuck with another issue. whenever I try and run the RUU to update my ROM, it tells errors and tells me that my battery need to be over 30% - when it's sitting on 90%+.

You may need to try the PB99IMG.zip method. I'll get some info when I'm at my desk

EDIT>

Right, you run the RUU from fastboot not the bootloader. RUU's are designed to run from android itself so take what it says with a pinch of salt. Put it in fastboot and stay there. Then run the RUU.

With a P99IMG.zip, you can put that on the root of your sd card (i.e not in any folders) which you may need to use a card reader to do.

To create a PB99IMG.zip, run the RUU (phone NOT connected). Whilst on screen, go to START>RUN and type
Code:
%temp%
and press ok.

This opens your temp directory. Look for a folder with a long name created at the time you ran the RUU. Open it and another folder of a similar name will be present. Open that. Find rom.zip and copy it somewhere else (because when you close the RUU, the temp folder disappears).

rename rom.zip as PB99IMG.zip (capital letters immensely important).

Put PB99IMG.zip on your SD as previously mentioned. Boot into hboot bootloader. After about 7 seconds it should find PB99 and flash the rom.

Do make sure your battery really is full though.

Everything else I can follow but this confuses me slightly. How do I run the RUU from fastboot?

I'm guessing this is what I do, but correct me if I'm wrong.

1. turn off phone
2. hold down "-" volume key, press power button
3. comes up with a white screen, 3 dancing androids and several options.
4. press power button to select fastboot
5. then run RUU on my computer?
(and all the while my phone is connected to my computer?)

Only thing is, when I try and do this, this is what it comes up with:
HBOOT
fastboot
recovery
clear storage
sim lock

I then select "fastboot"
comes up with another menu:
FASTBOOT
Bootloader
reboot
reboot bootloader
powerdown

Am I supposed to select bootloader, or run RUU on my computer with my phone plugged in when my phone is at the "fastboot" menu?

Thank you very much for your reply.

P.S. What does
flash the rom.
mean?

Okay so I did what you said without physically running the RUU from my computer. I'm not entirely sure what the heck I did but hallelujah, it worked!

Thank you x 1 000 000!
