Root Updating kernels...

...are you supposed to?

I was wondering because I upgraded to GV 2.1 last night through Villain Setup and noticed a list of kernels including the Evoillet one I'm using.

I've got the Evoillet 2.6.35.8-ManU-1.4-GB-HAVS-128-CFS

Once you flash a rom, the kernel will need flashing aswell as flashing a rom overwrites the kernel too.

When you update the ROM that will replace the kernel. So if you want to stick with the ManU 1.4 you'll need to flash that again after the ROM update.

This is one reason I don't use Villain Setup to install ROM updates - there are usually a few other things I want to flash after the ROM, including EViollet's kernel, and if I do it from recovery I can flash them all in sequence before booting, thus saving a lot of time.

Indeed.

I have all my zips named A_BOOT, B_Kernel, C_Scripts, D_Market, E_Drivers+RIL for example. I go through them in order.

I do re-flash it after a ROM update but what I meant to ask is does Villain Setup contain newer versions of my ManU kernel for me to update or is it the same old one?

It's the same one you get direct from EViollet's thread.

You'll find updates to the kernel in the XDA thread before they appear in Villain Setup.

Because its better, so if it works on your phone, you should use it too.

SURoot, I just flashed the kernel in your sig based on your post. I'm seeing a significant battery difference in the first 24 hours so far.

2 Questions:

1) Do I need to use SetCPU with this kernel? I don't have it installed, so I haven't tweaked any settings. The XDA post says SetCPU is needed, but in the version changes it notes that it's not needed anymore for 1.4?

2) I've noticed today that my mobile data takes a lot longer to connect. (I have a screen on profile, but I have to wait and wait - it used to be much quicker.) Is this something that could be due to the kernel, or just a coincidence?

I use set CPU but you dont have to use it.

If you havent got set cpu, how are you setting a screen on profile?

Screen on profile is for Mobile Data. I use tasker to turn on mobile data when the screen is on (and wifi not connected). When screen is off, it only turns mobile data on every 30 minutes to sync.

Oh right I see.

Not sure on that one. I use tasker to turn wifi on and off when needed but nothing like that.

maybe worth asking in the eviollet thread?
