How would I make sure my apps that I downloaded from sources outside the Android Marketplace stay updated?

I don't know if they are pirated apps, but for instance I have the Swype beta that I downloaded from the official Swype website. How do I know when that app is due for an update?

I believe that Swype email their registered beta testers when new versions are available.

You can run the Swype Installer, and it will check for updates.
