Help updating phone software

I am trying to update the phone software, but it fails, and it says that it was interrupted. Now I have to wait a day to update again, and it says that the software is up to date. Any ideas on why it is doing this?

Without knowing precise details of your phone model and existing firmware details and carrier, it could be that you are trying to update OTA on a poor data or Wi-Fi signal. If your carrier allows updating via Kies, you could try using that instead or, providing you are not with AT&T, you could download and flash the stock firmware update for your phone and CSC code, using Odin.

Kies says I have the latest firmware. It is MF3 (ATT).

MF3 = 4.3 firmware from June 2013

Unfortunately, AT&T do not use Samsung for their releases and so I would not expect it to be available via Kies. It looks as though you will need to take it to AT&T and get them to update it, manually, for you as their firmware is not available through the usual Samsung sources for you to download and flash via Odin.

They said they are not allowed to do that. Is that true?

Unfortunately, or fortunately, (as the case may be), I do not own the AT&T, SGH-i337, phone. However, since it is AT&T's firmware, issued solely by AT&T, I cannot understand AT&T refusing to flash it for you. I know that Samsung Service Points would do it for all models that they directly support.

I can understand AT&T not wanting their employees to update phones for customers. First, most are sales people and not techs, second, if anything goes wrong (and it will) they don't need the subsequent scene that will almost assuredly be made by the customer.

If you going to wait for the OTA, then make sure you have a solid WiFi connection and that the phone does not turn off WiFi when it goes to sleep or you will never be able to d/l it (from 4.3 to 4.4.2 is over 400MB). This update will only download over WiFi.

If you want to update the phone manually, it's not that hard.

First you have to download the update file.

Here is a link to the post on XDA whe another member has posted it. Post here if you got an update notification! - Page 5 - xda-developers

Step 1: Download the OTA package (File name: 2400258.zip).

Step 2: Rename the OTA file Update.zip.

Step 3: Connect the device to the computer via USB cable.

Step 4: Copy the Update.zip file to root of the phone’s internal or external SD card. Note that the zip file should be transferred to the root directory of either storage. Don’t put the file inside any folder on the card.

Step 5: Boot into Recovery Mode. To do this, power off the phone and hold down Home, Power and Volume Up buttons together. Release the three buttons as soon as you see the Samsung logo on the device’s screen.

Step 6: In the Recovery Mode, use Volume buttons to navigate between options and Power button to select an option.

Step 7: Now, select “Apply update.zip” if the file is copied to internal SD card, or select “Apply update from external storage” if you transferred the file to external storage.

Step 8: Wait until the flashing process is complete, and once it is done, select “Reboot” from the main menu in recovery. The Galaxy S4 will now boot up into Android 4.4.2 KitKat official I337UCUFNB1 build.

Cheers lunatic59!

I assumed that AT&T would have something like the Samsung Service Points with trained techies. I certainly wouldn't advocate a salesperson having a go. :ahhhhh:

If you want that, you have to walk your phone into a service center and not a store. They have them in every region, but they hide them pretty well. ;)

The one closest to me is about 1/2 hour drive and the building looks like an abandoned warehouse with a sign that could easily be mistaken for the fine print on a pack of smokes.

Lunatic59 - The update instructions that you linked are all dated February 2014. By that time the vast majority of AT&T folks should have already been on 4.3 / MK2 (which was already available by OTA when I got my AT&T S4 in December 2013). Are you saying that the exact same update file intended for use starting from AT&T 4.3 / MK2 will also work for the op coming from AT&T 4.2.2 / MF3?

You are correct electricpete. I was under the assumption thar MF3 was 4.3 but it'seems 4.2.2. The link I posted for download is not correct. I believe the xda link provides both update files. Going from 4.2.2 to 4.4.2 is an 800 mb file.
