Help Updating software does not see phone?

I am trying to root my phone. I am at the first part of the update software that tells you to power up the phone via volume down/camera/red button. When it tells me to plug in the usb cable to detect the drivers, the software does not see the phone. Although my computer pops up "samsung usb device" when I plug it in.

I had this problem when I initially updated to 2.1. I kept starting over, unplugging, etc... until it finally saw the phone. It took a couple hours!

Any ideas?

It just says "disconnected" in the lower right corner of the SW Upgrade screen, no "Com4".
