All your data should still be there it won't delete it,I've been running 2.3.6 for a while now without problems.

I got the OTA a while back. No problems here either. I know there were some people on the I9020A who updated to 2.3.6 and it broke tethering, but that update was pulled and replaced with a fully working 2.3.6 update instead.

No it doesn't delete anything, just updates the system.
That was an earlier version and all it did was prevent tethering on some phones. I can confirm this current version is all good and the phone runs a little smoother.
I did a factory reset after using the new update for a day because I like wiping it and starting fresh with a new firmware. I find it tends to run better with a reset. YMMV.

Well I gave it a try and it got stuck. It rebooted and showed a little Android with a loading bar for a brief second then changed to a caution sign with an Android infront of it and didn't do anything. It just stayed like that for 5 minutes or so (wasn't counting, jumped straight on my computer to figure it out).
I reboot using the vol up+power and it's back to normal but the update didn't install. There was an option to update from the SD in the dialog but it was enough of a scare that I decided to just skip it. What do I do now?

Backup your files and take note of the apps you have installed, and do a factory reset to clear the phone (you DO NOT need to delete the SD card contents). Then run the update, it should complete ok. No no no, you don't have to go this far yet. Which model do you have, the I9020T, I9020A, or I9023? I'll find you a full 2.3.6 ROM and point you to instruction on how to update it manually.

I9023. But I think I might put it off for now since my phones running just fine (and I don't use Google voice).
It no longer shows an OTA update available in the notification bar. Could this be a problem when ICS appears?

A full firmware ROM will wipe the phone, so it's the same result.
A manual update with the update only may or may not work as something is clearly causing an issue with the update.

The notification will come back in a few days or whatever the schedule is for your phone model.
The next major version Ice Cream Sandwich shouldn't be an issue as it will require a major update to the system similar to a reset.

Full ROMs don't wipe the phone. They just overwrite things like custom kernels and root permissions.

You can use this guide to walk you through the manual update process. Of course instead of using the updates mentioned in the guide, you will use the one linked above. There's also a video further down on the page that can walk you through it.

I thought full firmware installs write the system and data partitions. Each full firmware I've installed has effectively wiped the phone removing apps and data. The "SD card" memory is not touched though.

I know a lot of custom ROMs have a script that auto-wipe during their installation, but the official ROMs don't. I suppose I could be mistaken, but I'm 98% certain a full official ROM won't wipe your settings/apps/etc.

The OTA notification just popped up and it appears it was a success! Went all the way and it says in settings that it is indeed on 2.3.6. Hopefully the next update will be ICS

OK, new problem. I can't turn NFC off. I try to untick the box but it just goes darker and when I press it, it just goes grey instead of orange. How do I fix this? I don't want my battery being eaten for something I never use.

err... basic vanilla ROM issues ...install CM7.1 and get speed + power + more options than you ever knew ...and v2.3.7 [by the way you can lock/unlock the bootloader any time now ,so you won't have any warranty issues if something happens ,you only got to have a STOCK ROM before you lock it again] ...
