Upgrade advice

Android Enthusiast
So my Droid is well past eligibility for an upgrade, and I'm finally considering taking the leap. Right now the only two contenders appear to be the Galaxy Nexus, and the Droid Bionic (I'll take a look at HTC's offerings as well though). I'm really not sure which, if either would be the way to go and would welcome any advice anyone has to offer.

Some points I'd love to see in a new phone:

  • Amazing screen, at least as good as the Droid, both in resolution and in pixel density. Tough glass would be a plus as well. Had my Droid all this time and it still has no scratches on it. I've done side-by-side comparisons between my Droid and some other newer phones and it still blows 90% of the competition out of the water in terms of image quality. I don't think I can sacrifice that. Also, I don't want the thing to be impossible to see in daylight.

  • Decent battery life.
  • Large Internal memory. I've been struggling for a while with my Droid running out of memory to install or even just update apps, even with everything possible moved to SD.
  • Decent camera quality.

I enjoy the keyboard on my Droid for games, but sadly that doesn't seem to be a possibility with the new selection of phones. I'll get over it, but I'll miss it just the same.

Beyond that, I'm a little hesitant to upgrade to 4g. I've heard some phones can't toggle it off or switch to 3g, or at least can't do so easily. I've heard mixed reviews of past Samsung phones, and wasn't overly excited when I heard the new Nexus phone was going to be a Samsung model, but I am willing to give them a chance if it's the best bet.

I want an upgrade to the Droid that'll give me the Android experience I'm used to without fouling it up with a bunch of manufacturer bloat that can't be easily circumvented. I want a solid phone that'll serve me at least as well as my Droid has. I wish I could keep on with the Droid for a good while longer, but its age is sadly showing (god it's getting slow).

If I forgot anything I'll add it later. In the meantime, as stated above, any advice would be appreciated.

Want a keyboard? I beleive the Droid 4 may be coming out soon. Other then that, go to VZW and play with both the Bionic & Nexus before deciding.
I have a Bionis & once the OTA was pushed the 4G/3G/WiFI swapping/dropping problem has gone away. Both the Bionic & Nexus have enough memory. The Nexus has ICS, which the Bionic will get within 6 months.
FWIW, you can read all the opinions, but test drive them both first.

100% agreed. Try out each device.

I went for the BIONIC since it came out sooner and I needed a device pretty much right then. While I don't like my locked bootloader, other than that I love this phone.

The only real reason for me to consider the Galaxy Nexus is ICS - but I'm getting ICS soon enough, and this phone has everything that other phones do not removable battery, external SDCard slot, support for FM Radio, hefty build and superb screen - even in broad daylight. No other phone can quite match it in terms of all of the different things it has and / or is capable of doing, in my opinion.

MotoBLAH, as I called it, sucked arse - but on the BIONIC, it's actually pretty decent, even if it does affect the system, it's minutely, not like it was before. It's much more usable than the original BLAH was for sure.

As soon as the ICS 4 BIONIC project gets completed, though, I'll be long gone from BLAH....

And if the Galaxy Nexus had been available in September this conversation may have been different - I needed a phone then, not later.

I agree with John. If the Nexus had come at the same time as the Bionic, It might have changed my mind.....Then again it took about a month to find the bugs in the Bionic & another 2 for the OTA to come out. The Nexus is still brandy new.

Since we've now found a nearly foolproof way to revert our bionics to stock after applying leaked updates, i'm more than happy with my bionic
